Special Notes
Badges is largely in English but with a substantial use of Chicano Spanish as well as cultural references that point to a unique Chicano context of the 80's.

Character Descriptions and Notes (plus Storyline if applicable)

Buddy Villa: Latino, male, 54, husky mexican (Daniel Edward Mora type) - some Chicano Spanish language

Connie Villa: Latina, female, 48-year-old, attractive Chicana - some Chicano Spanish language

Sonny Villa: Latino, male, over 18 to play 17, tall, slim law student - converts to Cholo later in play

Anita Sakai: Asian-American brunette, female, 28, gorgeous, speaks a few Japanese words & does Odori dance

Ensemble: Age/gender/ethnicity open, over 18 - seeking 2 ensemble actors to play various roles, including TV actors, a wily mexican bandit, a BOGART sound-a-like, a reporter, LAPD voices, a stagehand, etc.

In his play I Don't Have to Show You No Stinking Badges, Luis Valdez makes use of certain stereotypical images in order to delve into questions of the relationship between the actor and the role he or she plays and between those roles and the reality of similar roles in society. He does this in a comic format which turns certain American entertainment conventions upside down for satiric effect. The familiarity of the television situation comedy is recreated on stage with a very different kind of family and with a different purpose.
