Edward James Olmos received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal of Jaime Escalante, a real-life, Bolivian-born math teacher. Escalante, determined to give his students at an East Los Angeles high school a leg up in life, uses unorthodox methods to teach them AP calculus. The film's emphasis on self-reliance, education and cultural understanding made it a rousing success, and in 2011, citing its cultural significance, the Library of Congress selected Stand and Deliver for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Edward James Olmos recibió una nominación en la categoría de Mejor Actor por su interpretación de Jaime Escalante, un personaje de la vida real originario de Bolivia, y profesor de matemáticas en Garfield High School donde con su determinación y estilo de enseñanza innovador logró que sus estudiantes, considerados incapaces de aprendizaje, llegaran a aprender los niveles más avanzados de matemáticas.

El enfoque de la película en la importancia de la fuerza de voluntad, la educación y la compresión cultural fue causa de gran éxito y en 2011, considerada de importancia cultural por la Biblioteca del Congreso al seleccionarla para ser preservada en su Registro de Cine Nacional.
