Legendary ex-Sony Chairman/CEO Tommy Mottola will be heading up the revived
Casablanca Records for Universal Music Group. Casablanca was previously run
by the late Neil Bogart and featured such artist as KISS, Donna Summer and
the Village People.
J-Lo in court again...the singer/actress/designers has filed a petition with the California Labor commission alleging that her former manager Benny Medina secured employment on her behalf, violating the state?s Talent Agency Act, which requires that anyone procuring employment on behalf of a performer must be a licensed talent agent. J-Lo wants millions in back commissions ? plus interest! Medina issued a statement saying the allegations against him were false, and stating the diva was adding him to the ?long list of people whom she has used and discarded after she took from them all she could get?.
HBO Latino launches the on-air campaign "Habla", showcasing voices from the
Hispanic community to provide a candid look at how U.S. Latinos see themselves today -- not how they are depicted in the media. The vignettes feature unknowns, to comedians, poets and actors and consist of clips that speak directly to the cultural diversity of Hispanics in the U.S., dealing with issues like what it's like to speak with an accent, cross-cultural dating, the growing popularity of "Spanglish," stereotypes, hair relaxants, catcalls, body images -- and even the strange fascination Latinos have with pork.
The Journey Within, the debut album from New York Yankee star and guitarist/composer Bernie Williams will be released on July 15th. The album features collaborations with Ruben Blades, Gilberto Santa Rosa and others. There will be a special event celebrating the launch of the album at the House of Blues in Chicago on July 13th, featuring a special guest artist. Williams is also the first Latin and jazz artists to be signed to Sir Paul McCartney?s music publishing company, MPL communications.
Roberto Garza, the Atlanta Falcons? #63 offensive lineman will be appearing in a PSA TV campaign to attract Hispanic parent participation and increase the number of Hispanic volunteers (mentors) for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta.
Mexican pop divas ?Las Bandidas? will make a special appearance in Alfonso Arau?s film ?Zapata?. The main character, Zapata, will be played by Mexican crooner Alejandro Fernandez.
StarMedia, the web portal serving Spanish-speakers in the Americas, has upgraded its site by offering Xtream Ad, which lets advertisers run full-length video/audio commercials via the web, as well allowing its US subscribers increased email capacity to 10 megabytes.

Local LA band Quetzal?s new album ?Worksongs? was released this week. The album is produced by Steve Berlin, of the famed Angelina band Los Lobos. Quetzal will be performing several dates throughout Southern California in support of the tour, as well as in-stores in Los Angeles and San Diego, a contest on LATV Live, and a record release party on July 17th at the Key Club. Claxson Interactive Group, Inc. will launch of a new online chat service for America Online Latin America, programming and hosting a web-based chat service for AOL Mexico and AOL Argentina that combines the brand and users of AOL and El Sitio in these country's services.

These sales will be includeding its "non-traditional" category, along with Internet, mail-order and concert-venue sales of physical music. Billboard Charts will also features sales of downloaded singles and albums, with sales data to come from Apple?s iTunes Music Store, MusicNet, Pressplay and others.

Univision Records debuted AKWID recently at LA?s House of Blues, one of the artists who are spearheading the new Urban Regional genre which consists of Hip Hop and urban beats fused with Regional Mexican music. The event was sponsored by Que Buena, a regional station in LA, and drew more than 1,000 people to the event. Los Lonely Boys out of Texas made a splash last weekend while playing Willie Nelson's Annual 4th of July picnic outside of Austin. Nelson joined the band on stage for a song and hailed them as his favorite Austin band. Los
