Editor's Note: At least 110 illegal entrants have died this fiscal year in the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection's Tucson sector, a record-breaking pace.

Color of Sand

colores de sangre,
colors of sand,
they mix in sadness,
last gasp of thirst,
lungs full of fire,
there is no escape,
la vida seca
is a dried scrap of skin,
once la casa
de los ni?os,
where voices never spoke
such terrible cuentos.
