DanceBrazil: Not Your Typical Modern Dance Performance

My admiration for modern dance began years ago after watching Audrey Hepburn's dance solo in the classic film "Funny Face." You might have seen it recently with a modern twist in The Gap's ad campaign as she dances to AC/DC's Back in Black. Check out both YouTube videos below.

But, some modern dance pioneers, such as Merce Cunningham, Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham or Mexico's Jos?® Lim??n could not have anticipated the interpretation of modern dance that DanceBrazil brings to the stage.

Wednesday night's closing performance at Irvine Barclay Theatre was a show not to be missed. The Brazilian modern dance troupe creates a unique fusion of Afro-Brazilian movement and traditional modern dance combined with capoeira, the traditional Brazilian martial arts form with origins in Africa.

DanceBrazil's initial piece, titled Banguela, introduced the "roda" or circle that one sees with many capoeira performances. The playful and lively performance demonstrated the company's ability to reinvent modern dance.

The premiere of F?® do Sert?úo began as a dark, dramatic and frenetic piece. Dedicated to Northeastern Brazil's harvest season it would not be complete without tropical rain. The dramatic conclusion includes some breathtaking acrobatic movements.

The original music by Tote Gira and Marquinho Carvalho compares to Andreas Vollenweider combined with lots of Latin percussion. There's even a little Lambada thrown into the mix.

You have one more opportunity to see DanceBrazil in California before they travel to New York. They perform at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center on Friday, March 15, 2013. Don't miss it!!
