The Whittier Radisson has announced that its 2013 "Poolside Salsa" series will begin May 3 with a concert by Orquesta Tabaco y Ron. The event will continue weekly until September 27.
This is the 20th anniversary of "Poolside Salsa" at the Whittier Radisson, which sees Salsa concerts, dancers, food, and drinks every Friday between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Five bands will alternate with Orquesta Tabaco y Ron during the series ÔÇô Orquesta Son Mayor, Conjunto Afro-Son, Chino Espinoza y los Duenos del Son, Guicho y La Tribu, and the Susie Hansen Latin Band.
For the dancers, Friday Salsa at the Whittier Radisson is an excellent way to unwind after the work week. Many go to the hotel straight from work looking forward to a cocktail and a bit of motion that some like to call their "Salsa fix." For others, it has become a networking event, a place where conversations can be carried on over the summer months and where, after a while, everybody can actually get to know your name.
"Conjunto Afro-Son is very excited to participate in the 20th anniversary at the Radisson," said band leader Bobby Escoto. "Being that we are a new project, to participate is an honor. The opportunity to mingle with the Salseros who have supported this event for so many years is very exciting. We are looking forward to an awesome season at the Radisson."
This year's "Poolside Salsa" at the Radisson will have a $5 dollar cover charge. For over a decade this event was free of charge but it comes as no surprise that the economy has made free events difficult to continue. The $5 fee will help the hotel cover the band and DJ expenses, and it will allow patrons to continue their evening indoors at the Radisson Lounge until 1:30 a.m.
The Susie Hansen Latin Band has been part of this event for many years. "We are excited to be back at the Radisson Hotel," said band leader Susie Hansen. "Can you believe this is the 20th summer season of Salsa at the hotel? Please join us!"
