Most Fiery Food Challenge in LA is Back!


This fiery contest is the most challenging and unique in the city of Los Angeles ... and it's back! Chich?®n Itz?í Restaurant (one of the best restaurants according to Jonathan Gold of Los Angeles Times) is set to host the third annual "Chichen Itza's Habanero Eating Contest" and is looking for contestants brave enough for the fiery challenge.

The winner will receive a monetary compensation along with presents provided by the restaurant. The contest is set for Sunday, June 16, as part of the Father's Day Celebration at downtown's Mercado La Paloma: 3655 S. Grand Av., Los Angeles, CA 90007. Free entrance for the whole family. Families are invited to join in the fun, and learn a little about the Yucat?ín and its culinary traditions, and cheer on their favorite contestants. Chichen Itza's Habanero Eating Contest will begin at 2 p.m. Interested contestants can register up to one hour prior to contest time at the restaurant. Up to 10 people will participate in the contest.

The brave contestants will be provided a bowl of chile habaneros along with a plate of delicious tacos of cochinita pibil. The person who eats the most chiles during the timed event will win a monetary gift certificate from Chich?®n Itz?í Restaurant.

Chich?®n Itz?í Restaurant specializes in the delicious cuisine of Mexico's Yucat?ín Peninsula, and in the Yucat?ín folks love their ultra-hot habanero peppers. These small, round babies rate 150,000ÔÇô325,000 on the Scoville scale making them hot, hot, hot. Compare this with jalape??o pepper that rates a mere 2,500ÔÇô8,000 on the same scale.

Chef Gilberto Cetina opened Chich?®n Itz?í Restaurant in 2001. The restaurant has garnered rave reviews from loyal customers and from such publications as Travel and Leisure Magazine, GQ Magazine, L. A. Weekly, Los Angeles Times, Hispanic Magazine, La Opini??n. Chef Cetina also runs a thriving catering business and markets a line of Yucatecan culinary products under the Chich?®n Itz?í Restaurant label that includes two delicious salsas of chile habanero/habanero peppers.
