For 10 consecutive Thursdays this summer, starting this week, the City's second largest park, Yvonne Burke/Ham Park will be turned into an outdoor movie theater featuring a 30 feet by 35 feet high inflatable screen, specifically created for outdoor projections. With an expectancy of over 200 people every Thursday ÔÇô except for July 4, 2013 ÔÇô the City's annual "Movies in the Park Nights" is the City of Lynwood's most popular summer attraction, aside from its 4th of July Spectacular.
"Last year, there was one night when we had 400 people out there," said Diana Romero, a Recreation Specialist with the City. "Our 'Movies in the Park Nights' are fairly new, about four years old, and we started doing them at local elementary schools, but then they started getting bigger and we needed more space, so we moved them to the park."
Families, said Romero, are known to set Thursdays aside in the summer specifically to make the City's "Movies in the Park Nights" their family nights. "Our 'Movies in the Park Nights' are turned into family nights, with families bringing out their chairs or blankets, and picnic baskets," she said. "Our families love our 4th of July Celebration and our Christmas holiday events, but our community really comes together for our summer 'Movies in the Park Nights.' There are never fewer than 100 people at our 'Movies in the Park Nights.'"
"Movies in the Park Nights" will take place June 27 and July 11, 18, 25 and August 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29. Movie-goers will also get to see: "Oz the Great and Powerful," "Ice Age, Continental Drift," and "Jack the Giant Slayer."
While there is usually a small concession stand available for movie night-goers to purchase popcorn, and hotdogs and drinks at a minimal cost, this year the City will be hosting its first "Farmers Market," starting on Thursday, July 11. The "Farmers Market" will coincide with the "Movies in the Park Nights" for eight Thursdays, and will take place within the Yvonne Burke/Ham Park parking lot, which is located along Atlantic Avenue.
"This year's 'Movies in the Park' will be better than ever," said Roger Haley, City Manager. "Summer nights will be filled with family fun time, where they can enjoy a movie under the stars and a farmer's market every Thursday night starting on July 11, 2013 through August."
Yvonne Burke/Ham Park is located at 11832 Atlantic Ave., Lynwood, CA 90262. For more information on "Movies In the Park Nights" call Diana Romero at (310) 603-0220 Ext. 391. For more information, or for vendor opportunities for the Farmer's Market, call Regina Brooks at (310) 603-0220 Ext. 254.
