With the United States Senate's constant efforts to tighten border control and consistent pressure on the current administration to increase deportation, Hispanic families across the nation are being torn apart. The "American Dream" that often defines our core values as a nation of opportunity is under constant threat.
At the current rate of deportation, an unprecedented two million undocumented Hispanic immigrants will be removed from the United States by 2014, according to the National Homeland Security.
The undocumented youth who call the U.S. home depend on proposed federal legislation such as the Dream Act, which has yet to be passed by Congress, and so every day 1.8 million young adults live in fear of having their dreams stripped away from them. In an effort to give each of them a voice, the movie "Isabella" was conceived, illustrating the story of a promising, smart and hardworking young Latina struggling to enter college amidst all the challenges and obstacles she faces due to her legal status and the outside forces working against her realizing her ambitions. Unlike many voiceless dreamers, she is able to take a stand for herself. This story reminds us that the U.S. is a country of dreamers, and time and again it's the place where the greatest dream of all ÔÇô the "American Dream" ÔÇô is challenged, but can ultimately be fulfilled!
Aiming to begin filming in the fall of 2013, the production team launched a Kickstarter campaign to gather $300,000 in funds by July 29th, turning to the innovative funding medium to gain supporters. Funding on Kickstarter is "all or nothing"; in order to receive any money creators must reach their ending goal or the project cannot come to fruition.
"We need the support of those that identify themselves in this film and those that believe that everyone should be allowed to pursue their dreams for all the rest out there whose voices are not heard and need motivation to never give up," says Leevon Daniels, Director and Producer of "Isabella." "We know that our goal is ambitious but we feel a deep sense of responsibility to bring this amazing story to the world."
Kickstarter is a crowd funding website that provides a platform for creative projects that are brought to life through donations. Project creators set a funding goal and deadline; those who sympathize with the message or enjoy the creators' vision contribute by making a pledge and in return receive rewards for their respective donations.
