Eleven Arts Inc. and Tiger Industry Films are pleased to announce the launch of a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the completion of "Man From Reno," a Japanese-English language mystery thriller set in San Francisco.
The international cast is led by Latino Hollywood legend Pepe Serna, a character actor in over 100 films, most notably opposite Al Pacino in "Scarface", as well as "American Me", "Silverado", and TV shows such as "Miami Vice".
Starring opposite Serna in her first leading American role is Ayako Fujitani, the child-star of the Japanese "Gamera" series and daughter of martial arts legend Steven Seagal. Joining them from overseas is Japanese superstar Kazuki Kitamura who has starred in almost 100 films including several by Takashi Miike, "Godzilla: Final Wars", and the highly anticipated upcoming sequel to "The Raid."
"Man From Reno" follows best-selling Japanese mystery writer Aki Akahori (Fujitani) as she escapes the limelight to San Francisco where she encounters a charming stranger (Kitamura) and becomes embroiled in a murder investigation led by a small town sheriff (Serna).
The brain-child of award-winning filmmaker Dave Boyle, "Man From Reno" has been a dream come true for actor Serna. "After working on Dave's first film, he promised that one day he'd write a lead role for me. I've heard that from different people at different times in my career," says Serna. "To have someone promise something, and to fulfill that promise - it doesn't happen very often in Hollywood."
Serna added that as a Latino actor, he rarely finds opportunities like this one where he doesn't have to always play a gangster or some other stereotype and says, "It's been the most wonderful experience of my life."
A pioneer in the independent film movement, Boyle embraced the practice of self-distribution early on with his previous films such as "White On Rice" and "Surrogate Valentine." After financing the production phase of "Man from Reno" using traditional routes such a private equity, the team is now turning to fans for support and to reach new audiences using social media. For pledges starting as low as one dollar, rewards being offered in the campaign include first run DVDs signed by the cast, HD downloads, collectible merchandise, premiere tickets in select cities, producer title credits, and a trip to the San Francisco premiere.
