As a child actor in Mexico City, Octavio loved many things about the theater. The lights, the staging, the sets but most of all the power the costumes held in bringing a character to life. After a trip to the mall in the states, where for the first time he saw pictures of icons like Marilyn Monroe and Mae West, Octavio began his lifelong quest to research actresses from the silent film era onward. He was captured by their inherent glamour and absorbed how beautiful clothes worked with their bodies.
While studying Octavio began to work as a costume designer, creating looks for shows and various music videos including Disney. Although he enjoyed the work, he yearned to create something of his own and switched to fashion design at FIDM, designing his first collection in 1998 and graduating in 2000.
Octavio is a master pattern maker, but his true love is the art of draping, which is reflective in every ounce of his collections. Inspired by the golden age of Hollywood, the Octavio Carlin Collection is accessibly glamorous for women who want to be noticed on their way to the opera, at a cocktail party, a wedding or walking into the Oscars. Octavio wants women to be seen for their beauty and uniqueness that is accentuated by the Octavio Carlin original she is wearing.
After working under the label Naqada, he launched his eponymous line, Octavio Carlin in 2006. That same year he opened his first store in the heart of Los Feliz. Two years later he followed with the unveiling of his exclusive Bridal Collection. His elegant sophisticated designs, impeccable draping and exquisite fabrics have become his signature.
It is the essence of his attention to detail that transforms every garment into a work of art. Perhaps this is the reason Octavio has remained on the forefront of the Los Angeles Fashion scene for the last decade.
In 2012 Octavio and his business partner opened the doors to the Octavio Carlin Atelier and Dress Shop in West Hollywood, first focusing on personal appointments with treasured clientele before opening the doors to the wider public to benefit from his expertise in Exclusive Ready-To-Wear, Special Occasion and Bridal all in one place.
Octavio Carlin lives in Hollywood and is an active member of the LA Conservancy, working to preserve architectural treasures from the golden age of Hollywood. Octavio sights Greta Garbo as one of his all time favorite style icons when flawless tailoring and unique women ruled supreme. He translates that into each Octavio Carlin original, where he wants women to feel beautiful, glamorous and secure within themselves.
Octavio was selected as a finalist in the 2011 Oscars Designer Challenge.
His works have appeared in such publications as Lucky, FLAUNT, Angeleno, British Glamour, Los Angeles Magazine, Los Angeles Times, 944, Razor, California Apparel News, Ciudad Magazine, WWD and The Daily amongst others.
