This past Saturday night, March 22nd, MMA fighter Laura Salazar showed the crowd at Xplode Fight Series why her nickname is "Lethal." Lethal Laura dispatched her opponent Jackie Bollinger midway through the first round with a barrage of vicious elbows that forced veteran referee Cecil Peoples to call a halt to the bout.
Highly touted as an amateur, Lethal Laura already had an impressive resume entering into the professional ranks. She began training under the tutelage of Anthony Britton at the UFC Gym in Rosemead, California in 2011. Looking to simply lose weight and hoping to gain confidence, "Lethal" Laura never imagined the journey that she was setting out to take.
In 2011 the UFC Gym product won the World Supergrands Martial Arts Championships in Sport Muay Thai under the guidance of Martial Arts Master Anthony Britton. In 2012 she traveled to Sparta Greece and won the world championships of Pankration (MMA) for team USA. In 2013 she simultaneously embarked on an amateur MMA career that saw her undefeated at 3-0 as well as continue her Muay Thai career improving her record to 17-3.
2013 also saw her audition to be a cast member for the The Ultimate Fighter with Rhonda Rousey and participate in Uriah Faber's first ever MMA draft combine. She also expanded her horizons by traveling to Thailand to train at the famed Tiger Muay Thai camp, home to such UFC notables as GSP (George St. Pierre), Roger Huerta, Jake Shields and Brian Ebersole. Upon returning from Thailand she further expanded her striking repertoire by joining the World-famous "Wildcard gym" (Freddie Roach, Manny Pacqiao).
Her next adventure in MMA will be on April 28th when she will travel to the fight capital of the world, Las Vegas, Nevada to tryout for The Ultimate Fighter reality show (TUF season 20.) Season 20 will be coached by Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis and will introduce the UFC 115 lbs weight class. unlike previous seasons, instead of winning a contract with the UFC, the winner will be "Crowned" the 115 lbs champion and be given the belt at the end of the season.
In 2014, Women's MMA is on the rise, fueled by stars such as Rhonda Rousey, Cris Cyborg, Misha Tate, the all-female promotion Invicta FC and whispers about the return of fighter-turned-actress Gina Carano. For "Lethal" Laura, the timing couldn't be better.
Already receiving interest from a number of larger promotions, Lethal Laura seems to be headed for a bright future full of promise. Watch out for this rising star inside the cage!
