Once Upon a Time in Mexico Brings in $24 Million

Congrats to Robert Rodriguez, whose ?Once Upon A Time In Mexico? opened in the #1 box office position with $24 million this weekend.

Bennifer Break up? Although there has been no official confirmation from either camp, rumors are rampant that Jennifer and Ben are no longer an item. Jennifer was spotted this last weekend partying with girlfriends in Miami (sans her infamous pink rock), while Ben was doing his thang in Las Vegas.

Michelle Rodriguez (SWAT, Girl Fight) and Alfred Molina have signed on to join Placido Domingo and Cheech Marin in the cast of ?Sian Ka?an?, the first Hispanic themed and produced animated major motion picture. The picture will be directed by Raul Garcia (The Wild Thornberrys, Jimmy Nuetron) and is about a girl named Maria living a normal life in Mexico, who is called on to rescue her father and save the Golden Snail (which is linked to the survival of all species on earth) from extinction.

Barnes & Noble are expanding ?Libros en Espanol? sections of their superstores by adding thousand of Spanish-language titles, dramatically increasing the number of Spanish-language books available at these stores. Their webiste, B&M.com has also launched a Libros en Espanol section.

Singer Jaci Velasquez tied the knot Darren Potuck from Goshen, Indiana last month. The marriage was a surprise as the couple chose to keep it secret in order to protect their privacy.

Mexican rap royalty, Control Machete, will be releasing their highly anticipated new album ?Uno, Dos: Bandera? this October 14th. The album was recorded in their hometown, Monterrey, as well as in LA & Mexico City, produced by Jason Roberts, Pato Elizalde and Machete?s own Toy Hernandez & Sacha Triujeque, and features collaborations with great musicians such as Randy Ebright (Molotov) Blanquito Man (former front man of King Chango), Natalia Lafourcade, Eric Wilson (Sublime/Long Beach Dub All Stars) and many others. As an added bonus, the CD will also feature 13 VideoClips, corresponding to each track on the album.

Leno a lo Latino - The Tonight Show began airing with live, instantaneous translation of English captions to Spanish captions this week.

Diario Latino, a daily newspaper in Spanish aimed at the Hispanic communities of San Diego County, launches in October. Diario Latino will be a tabloid newspaper with 30% of its pages printed in full color and will circulate from Monday through Friday with an average of 32 pages and a cost of 25 cents. It will include sections dedicated to health, our community, classifieds, entertainment, job searches and sports, among others.

Director Robert Rodriguez (Once Upon A Time in Mexico, Spy Kids) will be receiving the Raul Julia Award for Excellence for his positive portrayal of Hispanics at the National Hispanic Foundation for Arts 7th annual ?Noche de Gala? ceremony next week in Washington DC. Latin GRAMMY winner Jorge Moreno will be performing at the event. NHCA was founded by Jimmy Smits and Esai Morales in 1997 to promote Hispanic talent in the performing arts.

TV Producer Eric Booth held an open audition last week in Brooklyn, searching for a drag queen to host a new Spanglish talk show called ?Fruta Extrana? ? based on the long running public access soap opera ?Strange Fruit?. Although only 4 people showed up (and 2 of them were women), Booth found his host, who will be played by Edwin Andino, aka Dona Dolores Fuertes de Barriga.

Eva Mendes (Once Upon A Time in Mexico, 2 Fast 2 Furious) will join Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Eddie Griffin, Will Ferrell, Jacob Vargas and others in the romantic comedy The Wendell Baker Story. The film was co-written by brothers Luke and Owen.

Last week, we reported that Telemundo was in court fighting the city of Los Angeles for equal access to the city-sponsored Fiestas Patrias celebrations ? which happened to be produced by Univision. A U.S. District Court judge ruled that the city of LA did indeed violate the law by giving Univision special access to the event, and ordered the city to give local stations
owned by Telemundo the same access.

John Leguizamo is in talks to voice and produce the animated feature ?The Iguana Brothers: A Tale of Two Lizards?, a story about two laid back iguana brothers living in Mexico.

Maldita Vecindad will be touring the US on a ten-date fall tour sponsored by Budweiser. Destra Corporation Limited appointed Tom Hunter, former President of MTV Latin America (1995 ? 2000) as the new President of its MusicPoint International, the web-based service for Record Companies to deliver their new music to Radio Stations.

Pen?lope Cruz is in talks to star in the adventure epic Sahara, with Matthew McConaughey. The film is an adaptation of Clive Cussler's 1992 novel and revolves around an explorer's (McConaughey) search through the African desert for a deadly toxin. Cruz would portray a neurologist, the explorer's love interest.

Tu Musica en la Plaza, Houston?s Hispanic weekly concert series at Jones Plaza starts this week with a special tribute to Fiestas Patrias featuring performances by Grammy winning artist Jimmy Gonzalez y El Grupo Mazz and Mariachi Imperia September 16th.
