For all those who dream of making it in Hollywood and have visions of grandeur, the documentary comedy Journey of a Female Comic is a must-see. In the 88-minute feature, comedienne Kiki Melendez takes us on her journey to find her niche in show business as a Latina comic, actor and producer. It's a rollercoaster ride from the Dominican Republic to Miami to New York City and finally to Hollywood.
Along the way she finds success as a popular morning radio announcer in Miami and New York. She dabbles in theater there and finally finds her niche in Hollywood as a show host, comic stage producer and bicoastal Latina comedienne. She becomes a trailblazer creating her own entertainment talk show "Kiki Desde Hollywood" and Showtime Network comedy hit show, "Hot Tamales Live!" But what is so revealing and inspiring in this film is that Melendez keeps her identity as a proud Latina and personifies the struggle of how hard it is to make in Hollywood when you are not hiding your diversity and conforming to the requirements of mainstream roles.
Actors Esai Morales, the late Lupe Ontiveros , Edward James Olmos and many more comment on Melendez's character, talent and career. At the same time, they reflect on the long-standing lack of diversity in Hollywood and how much they personally have struggled to make it in the industry. Journey of a Female Comic is a movie from a "wise Latina" sharing her lessons learned in an industry that to this day still struggles with diversity, particularly when the performers are not prone to hiding who they are.
