Cardenas Markets Founders Get Honorary Doctorate Degrees

Cardenas Markets founders the late Jesus Cardenas and his wife and business partner Luz were honored with doctorate of humane letters degrees during Cal State San Bernardino's commencement ceremonies on June 14.

Luz Cardenas {pictured) was bestowed the honorary doctorate during the College of Business and Public Administration's ceremony. She also accepted the posthumous honorary degree for her late husband, Jesus Cardenas. The entrepreneurs and founders opened the first Cardenas Market in 1981, which has grown to a supermarket chain of 30 stores in California and Nevada with more than 3,000 employees.

"Through their family foundation they have given so much to our community," said CSUSB President Tom?ís D. Morales. "They will be known to the university community as Drs. Jesus and Luz Cardenas."

Accompanied by her publicist Marco Robles, who delivered her speech, Cardenas said she was humbled by the honorary degree and proud to join the ranks of other prominent business and cultural leaders.

"Our years of commitment and sacrifice to develop a business and our efforts to help others has been the path laid by my parents, as I teach my children and grandchildren," she said.

Cardenas also expressed gratitude to her employees, friends and family for their business success. "I recognize that our business has an inherited responsibility to give back and to assist the most vulnerable in our communities."
