For the past month or so, the Global soccer community had their eyes glued to televisions, computers, cell phones and/or had their ears close to the radio, for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Depending on who one was cheering for, this journey featured many thrilling victories or devastating defeats. Overall, records crowds have been tuning into all or some matches that was televised or broadcast on the radio.
Santa Monica Place held a FIFA World Cup Viewing Party by Coca-Cola. The event took place in the Center Plaza on Saturday, July 12th and Sunday, July 13th. The telecasts of the games were shown on a 33-foot wide, 19-foot tall HD screen, at 1:00PM on Saturday and 12:00PM on Sunday.
This special presentation was part of Santa Monica Summer Block Party Series- Summer Scene @ The Place. This beautiful, spacious, beachside shopping center delivered "um pouco de Brazil" (a little bit of Brazil) to the beach community by hosting a viewing party and other FIFA World Cup activities and entertainment in Center Plaza.
Santa Monica Place FIFA World Cup Viewing Party by Coca-Cola was a welcomed venue to see the game for the soccer fans who couldn't attend the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. I finally was overcome with World Cup fever. The only remedy was to join several hundred soccer fans in Center Plaza for the match between Brazil and Netherlands.
Before the match, the crowd and I were entertained by three amazing soccer freestylers (think Harlem Globetrotters of soccer). Umar Dalati, Alex Mendoza and Chris Kehne (pictured) showcased some fancy soccer tricks to the delight of a captivated crowd. The trio led several soccer clinics before the game and during half time.
There were spirited games with prizes. Two talented artists added an additional festive touch to the event as they painted World Cup themed tattoos on the face of kids, teens and adults.
This past weekend was hot in Southern California, but not as humid as it were in Brazil for the FIFA World Cup. The crowds were able to quench their thirst with free refreshments provided by Coca-Cola (sodas) and Zico (pure coconut water).
Susan Stich, from UCLA Health presented a pre-game stretch session so that the crowd could warm up their muscles before the kick-off of the game. Ms. Stich led the crowd in a few stretches to relax the muscles in their calves, hamstring, shoulders and neck before the long match.
Many soccer fans were adorned in t-shirts, jerseys and other memorabilia of their favorite soccer teams. A large group of soccer fans from Brazil were in attendance as well as a few fans from Holland. You are already aware that the Netherlands were victorious, with a final score Netherlands-3, Brazil-0.
A massive crowd gathered in the Center Plaza and all over The Place on Sunday for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final Game between Germany and Argentina. Germany emerged victorious winning the 2014 FIFA World Cup trophy, 1-0 over Argentina. Germany's victory mark the first time a European team has won a World Cup in the Western Hemisphere. If memory serves me right, 2018 FIFA World Cup will be held in Russia, followed in 2022 in Qatar.
