The Floricanto Center For The Performing Art launches its first Kickstarter Campaign to acquire funds for its 2014-15 Presenting Season. Pledges made between now and November 10th will help to keep ticket prices affordable, pay artists selected as part of the season, publicize the events of the 14-15 season, pay house staff and related expenses. The cost of doing this is approximately $1500 per performance, or $19,500 for a 13 week season. The Floricanto Center for the Performing Arts will host an End of the Campaign Giving Party during its Fiesta Del Dia De Los Muetos Performance on Sunday, November 9th, at 5 pm.
The now two years old Floricanto Center for the Performing Arts was originally a furniture factory that we reclaimed and converted into a community arts space. It is nestled in the City Terrace neighborhood of East Los Angeles.
Originally, we thought this would be an awesome dance studio for the 40-year old Danza Floricanto/USA and it has been. But we quickly understood that the space had the potential to be much more than that. And so over the past 2 years we have offered after school classes in music and dance to 100+ students each week. The Center has become a community meeting space where we have hosted over 12 groups this year alone.
But our greatest accomplishment is that we have brought live family Arts programming to this neighborhood.
In 2013-14 we hosted the musical groups Mono Blanco, Cambalache, Viento Callejero, Cui Cani, Bombachante Maya Jupiter, Aloe Black, Ana Tijoux and Martha Gonzales' transnational project, Entre Mujeres. In dance Floricanto presented its annual Dia de los Muertos Celebration, the original production, Alma Llanera-Spirit of the Plains and the ground breaking dance series, 'Folklorico With A Point of View'- over 13 productions.
All total we brought in an audience of about 3000 people into our 200 seat theater space and outdoor Courtyard during a 13 week season spread out throughout 2013-14. We did this with very little money, a lot of planning and a great deal of help from our friends.
However, this effort confirmed what we strongly suspected. Both audiences and artists in our community need live performance in both music and dance. Our artists need a place to perform. Our audiences need the enrichment of affordable family performances.
So we have developed a plan to continue to bring live performance to our audiences while supporting our local artists. We need to keep ticket prices affordable; we need to pay our artists; we need to publicize the events we create properly so that our community attends them; and we need to hire the staff to run these events. The cost of doing this is approximately $1500 per performance. $19,500 for a 13 week season in 2014-15.
Your generous contributions would allow us to continue bringing an affordable family oriented performance season to the City Terrace East Los Angeles community. A season which offers the artists a space with great sound, good dance floors, good lighting, a sit down audience and payment for their work right in our community.
