Opening Jan. 23, 2015, "Black Butterfly" explores the complicated world of five girls growing up in East L.A. The play is based on their writing from the seventh grade through high school, expertly put together into a series of poems, monologues, music and dramatic scenes filled with adolescent angst, humor, American slang, Spanish and Spanglish. The play is filled with introspective moments that are both joyful and sad, over many subjects that all girls face while growing up.
As the play progresses, the act of writing becomes transformative for the girls, their poetry granting them the ability to express themselves through memories, experiences and desires. Their progression from youth to early teens is noted by a series of poems, "Ten Things Girls Say to Each Other," which are scattered throughout the longer poems. As the girls grow, their concerns shift from topics such as their favorite television show, to their awkward interaction with boys, to their own growing self-awareness as young women. "Black Butterfly" will take its audience on a trip through the teenage psyche.
