CSUSB Veterans Center Co-hosts Memorial Day Celebration, May 25

Cal State San Bernardino's Veterans Success Center and the Student Veterans Organization will co-host a ceremony, "Remembering the Sacrifice," as a tribute to fallen military service members on Wednesday, May 20, at 9 a.m., on the south lawn of the John M. Pfau Library.

The event will commemorate the Memorial Day holiday, which falls on May 25 this year. It is free and open to the public. Parking on campus is $6 per vehicle.

The celebration will be emceed by 1st Lt. Rachel Wu, CSUSB Army ROTC Coyote Battalion; welcome remarks will be given by Lt. Col. Charles Peterson, commander, CSUSB Air Force ROTC, Det. 002.

The national anthem will be sung by Carrera Allred, CSUSB senior and Air Force ROTC cadet, and the colors will be presented the CSUSB Air Force ROTC Det. 002. Retired Maj. Mark McCloth, U.S. Air Force, will deliver the keynote address.

In addition, a tribute to the "Fallen Soldier" will be performed by the Redlands High School Air Force JROTC, followed by a moment of reflection by retired Lt. Cdr. Martin Jones, U.S. Navy. A flag-folding ceremony will be performed by Beaumont High School's Air Force JROTC.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard, Post 6476 in Colton, will perform a 21-gun salute. Retired Gunnery Sgt. Joel Daniel will play "Taps" and "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes.

There will also be a community service opportunity for CSUSB students in support of Memorial Day. Students are invited to volunteer at Riverside National Cemetery's Medal of Honor Memorial from noon to 3:15 p.m., to decorate the graves of the fallen with American flags and flowers.

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, is observed each year on the last Monday of May. One of the first official Memorial Day proclamations was made in 1868 by Gen. John Logan, who was serving as commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. This began the tradition of placing flowers on the graves of all the Union and Confederate service members at Arlington National Cemetery.

The first 40 volunteers to RSVP will be provided lunch and transportation by bus to Riverside National Cemetery. The bus will pick up passengers at 11:30 a.m. at the campus's turn-around. Pre-registration is required. RSVP to Jaime Espinoza at (909) 537-5195 or email jespinoza@csusb.edu .

Cal State San Bernardino will be closed for the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 25. Classes will resume on Tuesday, May 26.
