Little Red, A Chicana Punk Musical Opens at Casa 0101

A musical adaptation with a punk Chicana twist, Little Red is a contemporary re-telling of the classic Little Red Riding Hood fairytale. The familia-friendly theatrical production, for audiences five-years-old and above, takes us on a rebellious teenager's moving journey through the Holly-Woods as she tries to find her own voice and worth in a long-standing family tradition that she considers antiquated.

This tradition forces her to forgo technology and modern transportation to visit a language-limited grandmother who is losing her sight and needs her medicine. An awkward teen boy scout named Corky Woodsm?ín--assisted by an owl named Paz--is charged with "protecting" Red on her path as part of his own family heritage. He is fearful as they make their way through the thunderous Holly-Woods, but feigns courage in the face of Don Coyote. A younger, leaner stand in for the Big Bad Wolf, Don Coyote is a loner teen rocker who seduces Red with his style, demeanor, and British accent, in his quest to deprive Red of the most precious thing that she has, the family she has not yet learned to appreciate.

Casa 0101 stands firmly with the community against child obesity and child diabetes. In this production. Inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama's national "Let's Move" campaign the play addresses--within the context of the play--the need to be more active, eat better and get healthy. A number of presentations will engage kids in "Let's Move" sessions before the show and will reinforce the concepts by encouraging audience participation during the actual performance.

With music composed exclusively for the production by Grammy-winning artist Quetzal Flores, the unique and innovative production is directed and produced for Casa 0101 Theater by Edward Padilla. The play is written Anthony Aguilar and Oscar T. Basulto. The production team is extremely excited to have recruited the talents of La Puente's Vaneza Mari Calder??n a popular musician and recording artist who joined Grammy-winning Mariachi Divas in 2005, as Little Red Musical Director.

Tierra Blanca Dance and Tierra Blanca Arts Center founder Blanca Aracely Soto also joins the production team as Choreographer. Basulto is a contributing editor at Playwriting in LA, an online arts magazine and currently works at the National Association of Television Program Executives. Anthony Aguilar created the popular El Verde super-hero series of plays which debuted at Casa 0101 over five years ago and has had local stage readings of his work presented by the prestigious Center Theater Group.

Edward Padilla is President of Casa 0101 Theater and former Artistic Director for Casa 0101 (2006 to 2009). He is an actor, director, producer and owner of LaloPad, an entertainment casting and consulting company, launched in 2011. With an extensive list of both West Coast and national stage acting credits, he has also dedicated himself to producing and directing new work by emerging playwrights from throughout the L.A. area but especially from writers who, like himself, call Boyle Heights home.
