LA Is Main Course In a Special Episode of En Ruta-T


Whether it's tortillas outselling burger buns or salsa becoming more popular than ketchup, Mexican food (an $8 billion U.S. market) has officially conquered America and is here to stay. And what better treat to give a nation of Mexican food fiends than a new TV show taking them on a virtual journey of the best of the best.

"En Ruta-T: tacos, tortas y tamales," the new, original half-hour docu-series from Canal 22 Internacional, takes its Mexican food lover's dream road trip to the multicultural mecca of Los Angeles in Episode 2, which premieres on Sunday, December 27, at 7:30 p.m. PT/ 10:30 p.m. ET. Outside of Mexico, Los Angeles has more Mexicans than anywhere else in the world. In fact, they compromise almost half of the city's population! With so many options to choose from, it was no easy task to find the best tacos, tortas and tamales.

In the second episode of "En Ruta-T: tacos, tortas y tamales", hosts Santi, Alex, and Danky begin their culinary quest in Boyle Heights and move onward to Hollywood and Los Feliz. From the El Mercadito de Los Angeles and its authentic music-filled staple Los Mariachis to the industrial cuisine of local taco stand-turned hotspot chain Loter?¡a Grill and those infamous Yucatan tacos of Yuca's Hollywood (a Los Feliz favorite for more than 40 years), LA's food is as much a story of contrasts as the city itself. "En Ruta-T: tacos, tortas y tamales" not only digs into these savory nuances, but also explores the pulse of Los Angeles through its music, people and heritage.

The story of successful Mexicans can be seen everywhere in the city, which represents the dream of many immigrants, legal and illegal alike. Among notable locals featured are Loter?¡a! Grill executive chef, Jimmy Shaw, Mariachi Association President, Arturo Ram?¡rez, Mama Yuca founder, Socorro Herrera, and Director of the East LA Community Company, Isela Graci?ín.

The goal of "En Ruta-T: tacos, tortas y tamales" is to spread the life stories of Mexicans who, through food, have managed to immerse Americans in the culture and cuisine of Mexico. Intersecting modern technology with old world tradition, the show is one of the first to use drones providing a bird's eye view of the gastronomic and geographical diversity of the United States.

Where will they end up next? From California to New York, with plenty of stops in between, stay tuned as Santi, Alex, and Danky eat their way across America!
