The Woman Across the Street

OMG! I just got an invitation to Doña Toacita's 100th Birthday!

I'm going to celebrate the woman across the street.

I grew up in Yuma, Arizona. I had a neighbor across the street. Her name is Doña Tomacita Casttaneda.

Doña Tomacita had a lot of flowers, plants, herbs and trees in her garden.

I used to run across the street when I saw her outside watering her garden. She used to tell me stories about the plants: how La Yerba Buena got its name.

She use to give me cuttings off her plants and I would go plant them in my yard.

Sometimes they would grow but most of the time they wouldn't.

I have some very fond memories as a child on 2220 Walnut Street.

I use to play with the Castañeda children: Carmelita, Francis, Gilbert. We had so much fun playing Red Rover, Mother May I, Green Light Red Light....those were the days.
