?Que suave!

As the weather gets hotter, so does the action in the Chicano music world. Upcoming concerts, dances and celebratory events signal this summer as a BROWN one to party it up with the Gente and live life large, like you know we should! Chicanos just know how to party...simple as that! I highly recommend steppin' out with Mi Gente!

So it was, on a beautiful Cinco de Mayo / Mother's Day week end, I was honored to be asked to host & emcee a dinner dance at the famed "Club", at the Fairways Restaurant, Tavern and Country Club in Pacoima, California, on a warm Southern Califas Saturday night.

Pulling out all the stops for a sold out crowd, Chuck Herrera and his staff from East Valle Promotions put on a beautiful celebration party that included dinner, Mariachis, the powerful San Fernando Valley group THE COMPANY, and special musical attraction, the pride of Southern Califas Salsa & Latin Soul, NUESTRO. The Gente came all dressed up and looking good for this one! If you missed it, you missed out! This is what you call steppin' out, Southern Califas BROWN style!!

In a comfortable and well-decorated Country Club environment, a generous ,delicious Mexican gourmet buffet dinner was enjoyed while the renown Marichis De Aztlan seranaded the dining crowd, going from table to table in true minstrel fashion. Their classy performance and impressive traditional costumes brought out the Brown pride in everybody, with gritos coming from every corner!

As usual, one of the hottest Chicano club DJ's in the Valley, DJ Flacomania, got the circulation and digestion going with his hot mixes of dance favorites. There seemed to be a certain sparkle and excitement in the air this evening, with the well dressed Gente getting up and filling the dance floor quickly & easily. Mother's Day...with all kinds of Mamas in the house! Wow...You should have been there!

A highlight of the evening came when Chuck Herrera's lovely wife Lucy, in secret cahoots with the Staff of East Valle Promotions, myself and NUESTRO (as they acted like they were slow setting up prior to being introduced), surprised Chuck with a birthday cake and well wishes from everybody in the house, as NUESTRO helped the crowd with a beautiful rendition of the Birthday song. It was a nice moment, as the crowd showed their true appreciation for a man who has put his heart & soul into bringing the finest in Chicano entertainment to the San Fernando Valley...the moistness in Chuck's eyes made it all worth it! Well...get on then, Bro! Glad I was part of it!

Then, I had the pleasure introducing the pride of Southern Califas Salsa & Latin Soul, and headliners of the annual Oxnard Salsa Festival for the past 10 years, NUESTRO.

Coming out 10 members strong, Ruben Palazuelos & NUESTRO gave the crowd more than they came for, a lot more! Hitting all the corners with smooth Latin Jazz, then with their trademark Chicano take on Salsa, Oldies, Cumbias and Swing, NUESTRO put on an impressive performance that will most certainly bring them back to the Valley, according to Chuck Herrera, who was spotted more than once on the dance floor, along with me and all his staff! I also bumped into Steven Chavez of the East L.A. Revue, Richard "THEE MR." Duran, and DJ Flacomania on the dance floor, as the good feelings in the house became contagious, and it was hard to stay in your seat! Man... puro Raza in action.

Then, THE COMPANY, featuring the "Diamond of the Valley", Becky DeSpain, promising a surprise for the occasion, came out with a new brass section and conguero mas suave, rockin' the house with some new tunes and givin' a twist to some old favorites. Making many new fans that night, the COMPANY showed the Gente what's up, with their hard hitting sounds in Oldies, Disco, Funk, Latin Soul, and good old fashioned Rock n Roll.

Nothin' but A PARTY! No pedo, no pleitos, no fools...just that good looking, hip, 40 & over Chicano crowd, good food, good drinks, great entertainment, lot's of dancing, and one hell of a good time. Becoming my second home, the Club in Pacoima promises to have more good times in store for us this summer. Be there, Mi Gente!! I'll meet you there!

And so, my musical cruise through the heart of Aztlan turns another page on to the next, bringing you all the 411 on Chicano music happenings in Southern Califas here, only on LatinoLA.com ...

HAPPY MOTHER's DAY to all you beautiful BROWN mothers de Aztlan! Without you, none of this would EVER have been possible! Thank you!!...especially MY mom, who taught me the love of music!

..who knows where Frankie Firme will show up next?....hmmmmmmm

Note: Chuck Herrera and East Valle Promotions have a promising party schedule coming up, so don't miss out! Friday, May 21st, the Veteranos of Chicano Rock n Roll, The Famed East L.A.
