4th of JULY in San Felipe... Part III

Well....well...so you have endured two days worth of self-centered, boring life-threatening, and self gloating words describing a normal fourth-of-july weekend getaway...and you probably think: could this get any more boring with the detail...

well....my answer to all your questions is:::::READ ON!!!!....

so lets get this vacation over with...and talk about DAY III.....I'll keep it simple...i hope...

DAY III -July 4th....

The day starts early...having learned from the previous two days with the grande family....I know early means EARLY...hey..what kind of vacation itinerary starts your day @ the crack of dawn...well close to it at least...the GRANDE vacations do...

Bright and early meant 6 this morning....try AM..thanks to our friends at NOKIA...i had the duty of setting the alarm on my cell phone to make this happen....Whatever happened to night-table-alarm-clocks...or hotel wake-up calls...I tell ya, these kids today don't know what it was like back in the good ole days....

Today's trek was going to take us across the desert from the east part of the peninsula to Ensenada...clearly on the pacific ocean side....this would mean we would get the "real scenic" ride home, not Tio Moncho's view of mountains...i like this one...We decided to hold off on breakfast to avoid the midday sun...Along the way home...we would stop by and get snacks along the way....so we thought...

The plan was to drive to "LA Bufadora" in Ensenada....it's suppose to be one of the biggest geysers in the world...I had never been there...so I thought it was a good idea...Everyone was in agreement to make that lone stop before heading straight home...except, all along the morning hours there was speculation from a mystery voice that kept pitching a stop at Puerto Nuevo...near Rosarito...this would mean a longer stop...it seems everyone wanted to get home in time for 4th of july festivities...I had a party to go to...and David had plowed down $140 for the "real deal" of fireworks...and a very early case of "cabin fever" was surfacing too...

SO...we began the trek to Ensenada...to find the Bufadora...On the way over...the sandman came down on us...and we all got some added shut-eye...nothing says "a drive through the desert" than some more sleep...on an empty stomach...

We finally reached ensenada...and it was another 20-30 minutes before we would find this "bufadora"...well...with the luck of the FARO..and the Banana Boat...Being the gambler that I am: I think the odds were stacked up against us...wouldn't you say?

Along the way...we found eateries made for everything except tacos...There were tamale makers almost everywhere you could spot...and the tamale varieties were not of this planet...everything from chicken, to beef, to all kinds of fruits...yes...fruits: strawberries, pineapple's...etc...It turns out everyone had the same idea for the B ufadora as we did...and the traffic was backed up...and i mean Downtown LA fwy-style backup...with no end in sight...so that's when the hunger gods came down on us...and we all requested a stop to buy some tamales...

At this time...the mystery voice again said the magic words "puerto nuevo"....and it was at that right moment that everyone got hooked...in comparison with a taco or elote stand...we were 1 hour away from all the LOBSTER you can get your hands on for cheap....I was down...and so was everyone else..and from the trenches emerged the mystery voice...It was Ingrid's mom....and she knew she would eventually get her way with the right tools...Hunger and Timing...way to go mom....good skills...

So at this time we decided to head north to Puerto Nuevo...non stop...and save our energy for the feasting...not a bad idea...and as for Miguel's quest for "La Bufadora"...you could say I'll wait til next time...it'll still be there I hope....but the Lobster won't...ha...

Well having Lobster in sight...everyone was upbeat the rest of the way...even making a rest stop at the toll booth center...and starting a make-shift soccer game in the parking lot...a couple of quick passes...a header into passing traffic...and some smiles...we on our way to Lobster town...damn it!!....

Puerto Nuevo:
We arrived...at about 1...and good timing..along with the rest of California...everyone and their respective mothers made the same plans...the place was sooooo packed...I had never been there but have heard the legendary stories of this place...but even I knew it was packed to capacity....I was afraid of the long lines...which if you know me...I hate lines period.....clubs, movies, restaurants, etc...I'll even do away with road/traffic markings when it comes to my hate for lines...

"Fear no more"...Ingrid..tells me...."we have a place"...I swear it sounded soooo "pimp" like...I trust her...so i was more at ease...and did she ever have a place...this restaurant was out some...but it was very much worth the walk...it centers on this balcony overlooking some ocean and some of the dwellings...we got the table farthest out on the balcony....and the adjoining table...for Tio Monchos group....

I just let it be for the moment and went with the flow...As they say "when in Rome..."....except this "Caesar" was incredibly hungry...so I ordered....we all ordered...and then came the fun....

The place hooks up a appetizer...which in my case was a "ceviche"...it hit the spot...then came the main course....LOBSTER...I had in front of me...some of the best looking lobster I had ever seen...but it wasnt the color or texture...or even the white meaty part of it...it was the abundance...tons of it...and all for the taking...and to top it off...Ingrid's mom raised issue about the alcohol in the margarita she ordered..and to make up for it...the Captain sent us 8 more halfs just to keep us happy...i couldnt believe it....I was in Lobster heaven...all for $12...

funny if your ask what happened with the rest of the group..well...who cares!!...I was in lobster heaven....NO I'm just kidding...they were enjoying it just as much as I was....except for one detail....which became a bigger issue as the lunch progressed..."MAMA ELVA"....it seems in the midst of my Lobster feasting I hadn't noticed the drama building....but I was brought up to speed by Ingrid...It turns out Mama Elva was bustin' "Caprichitos"...which if you don't know what that means I'll spell it out....DRAMA....she was a little ticked off that she was not at the first table...but instead had to sit with the wrath of Tio Moncho...so she was making comments, faces, and attitude...

To be honest I didn't even see it....because, again, I was in Lobster heaven....and loving it.....I could not even keep up with the table drama...i was just into my lobster drama...

And as all good things come to an end...so does my lunch...and now the trick was to make it the rest of the day drama free....we decided to walk around to do some shopping...and any last minute "pit stops"....everything was A-ok...

There had been a second rumor/voice circulating that had the entire group stopping in TJ to visit someone's family in god knows where..for god knows how long...well...since it didnt include the words "lobster"...I was opposed...and so was the rest of the family in our van (because of the cabin fever development).....Not the same could be said about Tio Moncho...maybe because it was his idea to begin with....so this is where you're glad you took two forms of transportation.....and the two went their seperate ways...tio moncho on his way to TJ..and our group on the way Home....finally..in the words of the legend "LL": "Going back to Cali"...a perfect end to a perfect getaway....

We finally made it home at about 7pm...which if we had carried out that betting pool...then I, my friends, would've been the lucky winner....

Thus ended....the 4th of july weekend for yours truly.....

See ya next vacation.....November 2005...to vegas....for my birthday.....
