Chicanos on the Sunset Strip
Gilbert Esquivel & Co. rock Hollywood
The evening was warm, there was electricity in the air, the night lights were bright & sparkling, and a whole lotta Gente were struttin' the Sunset Strip on a Friday night like never before.

So it was, on Friday , August 20th, that Gilbert Esquivel and his famed All Star Joker Band pulled into town for the Latino Old School Music & Comedy Revue at the World famous Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip for a show the likes that have never been seen at this venue.
To a sold out, standing room only ( and of course good looking) crowd, Gilbert and Co. painted Hollywood Brown. With an impressive sound system provided by Hector Gonzalez, house rockin' music and side splitting comedy were the bill of fare that kept the house full till closing.
Top comedians like Rudy Moreno and Charles Sanchez plied there trade in classic fashion, and in between, the all star band with different guests, deftly breezed through different genres in a style that left the crowd wanting for a dance floor.
Of the many celebreties in the audience, I ran across Congressman Xavier Beccera (who introduced me on stage), Superior Court Judge John Gonzalez, The East L.A. Revue's Steven Chavez, LatinoLA's Abelardo de la Pe?a Jr., KCLA FM's Lollie Waterman, and singer Ernie "El Torpedo" Medina, among others. So many good Gente came up to me that I can't begin to remember all their names, but they all agreed : This was OUR night to shine, and shine Gilbert did!
With his barrio humor, wild antics, side splitting one-liners, expressive dancing and a great stand up routine, Gilbert proved once again why he is one of the greats of Chicano comedy and entertainment.
I was honored to have co~host duties on opening night, and I must say, to have been given the opportunity to have stood on the same stage where Hollywood greats like Frank Sinatra, Desi Arnaz, Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin and Richard Prior once performed, in the company of a Latino comedy legend, among some of the most talented musicians around today, was quite a rush for this old vato from the 'hood!
And course, my Gente were lookin' good!! And we partying like only we know how!
I didn't want the evening to end, but like all good songs and rides, it did on a cloud of love & appreciation for Chicano talent.
The show runs every Friday and sells out quickly, so get your tickets now! You have to see this show, Mi Gente, it is truly a BROWN thing, baby! Don't miss out!!
