Congrats to Miami band Volumen Cero, whose first single "Autos" has held the #1 spot on Radio and Records Latin Rock Chart for six weeks straight! The band also recently made history as one of the first Latin bands to chart on MTV's top 40. Volumen Cero will be playing December 6th at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood. Pedro Almodovar's new film Mala Educacion received an NC17 rating from the Motion Picture Association of America for the inclusion of a sex scene between two gay men. The film opened in New York last week, averaging almost $50,000 per theatre. The film opens in Los Angeles on December 10th.
Univision Communications has dropped its lawsuit against Nielsen Media Research, which claimed that Nielsen's new Local People Meter TV rating system miscounted young Hispanics and large Hispanic family viewers. Additionally, Nielsen has dropped its countersuit against Univision.
Abercrombie & Fitch has been ordered to pay $40 million to thousands of minority and female plaintiffs, stemming from a race and sex discrimination lawsuit in which minority plaintiffs alleged that they were directed to low visibility jobs instead of prominent positions. The brand has also agreed to hire 25 diversity recruiters to ensure hiring and promotion of minorities and women, as well as to include more Hispanics, Blacks and Asians in its marketing materials.
J-Lo's new video, will star an army of Jennifer clones - a play on Robert Altman's film "Short Cuts", the video will explore simultaneous moments which take place in a nightclub in the span of the song, Get Right. We will see the big sister DJ Jennifer, the crying Jennifer, the drunk Jennifer, the fighting with her boyfriend Jennifer, the diva Jennifer, the waitress Jennifer, and of course, various dancing Jennifers.
President Bush has nominated Cuban-born Carlos Gutierrez to serve as Commerce Secretary. If confirmed by the senate, Gutierrez would be the second high-profile Latino to join the new cabinet. Bush also committed to Mexican President Vicente Fox that he will back a plan that would allow undocumented immigrants to remain in the US under a special "guest worker" status. The plan, not yet a bill, would give 3-year work visas for workers, with the opportunity to file for permanent legal status at the end of the term.
Multi-Grammy award winner, Juanes, has announced the first dates of his world tour to support his new album, Mi Sangre. Hispanic Magazine will present its 9th annual Hispanic Entrepreneur Awards program in New York City on Thursday, December 2nd at the St. Regis Hotel. The awards ceremony honors Latino men and women who have made significant contributions in their fields and have made a positive impact on the Hispanic community. Honorees include Robert W. Garcia of R.W. Garcia Co; Marciano Morales of Caprock Home Health Services; Victoria Varela Negrete of The Cartel Group; Charles P. Garcia of Sterling Financial Group; Denny J. Garcia of Potomac Management and David Hernandez of Liberty Power Corporation.
Escencia: The Songwriters Night, a Miami based singer/songwriter showcase, will pay tribute to the late Ellen Moraskie, a pioneering Latin music executive, on December 15th at Hoy Como Ayer in Miami. Artists performing include Jorge Villamizar (Bacilos), Soraya, Elsten Torres and others.
Coors Brewing Company will team up with non-profit Hispanic Federation to supply food to New York and New Jersey families in need, through their program Cena en el Barrio, which will provide food baskets to 1,500 families this holiday season.
Grammy winning Afro Latin band Ozomatli has signed a worldwide administration agreement with Famous Music Publishing, which covers Ozo's new album Street Signs on Concord Records. The album features collaborations with salsa legend Eddie Palmieri, Los Lobos singer/guitarist David Hidalgo, and others.
"La Preciosa", is the new Spanish-language radio format in Las Vegas. KWID-FM will target adult 25-54 listeners, and offer Spanish hits highlighting Mexican artists such as Vicente Fernandez, Los Bukis, Juan Gabriel and others. The station's flip to Spanish-language music is part of Clear Channel Radio's Hispanic programming initiatives announced in September.
Congrats to Gustavo Santaolalla and his musical project Bajofondo Tango Club, which is nominated for the BBC Radio 3 awards for Best World Music Artist from the Americas (alongside Bebel Gilberto, Lila Downs and Lhasa). Other Latino artists nominated in various categories include Ojos de Brujo, and Bebo & Cigala. Music from Bajofondo Tango Club is also featured in the new Kahlua "everyday exotic" tv commercial - amazing!

Johnnie Walker Black Label has partnered with designer Gustavo Arango, formerly of Bill Blass, and renowned chef and Food Network regular Aaron Sanchez for Johnnie Walker Fusion - an evening to celebrate the bounties of the Latin spirit through creativity in expression. Johnnie Walker Fusion will hit Miami, Houston, New York and Los Angeles, and will feature specialty cocktails & dishes prepared by Sanchez that reflect each city, with Arango developing the look and feel for each venue, as well as designing the outfits that will be worn by the servers.
mun2 will host its second anniversary of The Roof in Dallas on December 2nd at Escapade 2001, featuring performances by Ivy Queen, Baby Bash, Don Dinero, Frankie J., Ilegales and others.

Bahiano, the ex-lead singer of famed Argentine band Pericos, is recording a solo album on Universal, which will be released prior to the end of the year. The album is produced by Afo Verde and will include 14 new tracks.

Old Navy has tapped two-time Emmy award winner Myrka Dellanos - People en Espanol's "Star of the Year" for their holiday campaign targeted at Hispanics. As part of the campaign, Old Navy will contribute donations in the form of gift cards to three non-profit organizations that work with underprivileged Latino children and families.
A movie based on characters from Luis Jimenez' El Vacilon de La Manana radio show is scheduled for release in 2005. Jimenez wrote the script and the film will feature familiar characters from the show, both real and fictional.
