A Woman of Intellect & Character

Eighty-eight years ago, on April 8th 1914, Maria Felix G?ere?a, one of the world's most acclaimed, respected and admired film actresses, was born in El Quiriego (Sonora), Mexico, from the union of Josefina and Bernardo Felix. Sadly, the day of her birth will also be remembered as the day of her death. Today, at one o?clock in the morning, Mar?a Felix passed away during her sleep in her residence of Polanco, Mexico D.F.

She crystallized -- as what cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa coined -- the best facial structure for a film close-up and exemplified in Emilio (El Indio) Fernandez' 1946 film "Enamorada", Mar?a will go down in history, not just as an icon of her country?s Golden Cinema Era, but also as the uninhibited woman of intellect and character, that became Mexico?s most emblematic female figure.

The body of the sleeping diva was taken into the interior of the Palacio de Bellas Artes, a most fitting place for the multitude of thousands that have gathered to mourn this loss. Ernesto Alonso, actor and personal friend, will lead a procession that will take her into the French Pantheon where she will be buried next to her son Francisco.

Today, and every April 8th , will be a day of celebration and remembrance marked by the legacy of 47 films -- and the countless close-ups -- that attest to the grandiosity of this legend.

May She Rest in Peace.
