Para Los Ni?os, a highly respected nonprofit organization serving some of Southern California?s most impoverished children, has announced the hiring of Elena Stern, a twenty-year veteran of California political campaigns, media relations and the public policy arena.
Stern will fill the newly created position of Vice President of Government and Media Relations, in which she will work to complement the efforts of the current senior team to further elevate the reach, presence and profile of Para Los Ni?os throughout the region.
?I am ecstatic that we were able to bring Elena into our organization,? said Miki Jordan, President and CEO of Para Los Ni?os. ?She has for many years provided the organization with strategic counsel and media relations expertise on a pro-bono basis. Having her in house and full time will make a significant difference and will certainly help us reach even greater heights.?
In her capacity as Vice President of Government and Media Relations, Stern will be responsible for developing and enhancing relationships for the organization with government and elected officials at the local, state and federal levels, and promoting the important work of the agency through targeted media outreach.
Stern most recently served as a Director in the Public Affairs Practice in the Los Angeles office of Burson-Marsteller, a global communications company. During her tenure there,
she managed projects for both national and local clients. She was also the chair of B-M?s West Coast Hispanic Practice.
Among her notable projects for B-M was her work on the successful campaign in 2003 to defeat Proposition 54, an initiative sponsored by former UC Regent Ward Connerly to ban the gathering and analyzing of racial data. Stern oversaw the statewide earned media effort and collaborated on coalition building and ally development. The campaign was honored with several prestigious national public relations awards.
Prior to her work with Burson-Marsteller, Stern worked at various levels of California government and politics, including the administrations of Mayor Tom Bradley, the first and current elected Insurance Commissioner, John Garamendi, and former Assembly Speaker and current Los Angeles City Councilmember Antonio Villaraigosa.
An alumnus of the University of Southern California, where she earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees, Elena has lived in both Spain and Mexico, and has traveled extensively throughout Europe and Latin America. She speaks Spanish with near fluency, and reads and writes it with proficiency.
?Working with the folks at Para Los Ni?os is a dream come true,? says Stern. ?I?ve always been in awe of the range and caliber of the services they provide and the absolute commitment and dedication of the staff. As a new mother, I am especially impressed with the professionalism and compassion they extend to the families they serve. I look forward to joining the team and working to help Para Los Ni?os maximize its full potential.?
Para Los Ni?os opened its doors in 1980 in response to the plight of children living in Skid Row hotels. Without appropriate intervention, these children were often kept locked in hotel rooms while parents worked, or were left alone to wander the halls and dangerous neighborhood streets. Initially, 45 children received care at the agency.
Today, in its 25th year of operation, Para Los Ni?os assists more than 2,000 children, ages 6 weeks through 21 years, each weekday ? and more than 4,000 families every year ? from 20 sites in some of Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties? most impoverished neighborhoods. Para Los Ni?os? core services include child development and education, a Charter School, after-school enrichment, youth diversion and delinquency prevention, and youth workforce services. In addition, Para Los Ni?os offers support to at-risk families, including child abuse prevention and intervention, mental health services and comprehensive family support.
