Where Are They? / ?Donde Estan?

Where Are They? Donde Estan? is the latest play written by Roxanna E. Sanchez. The play was commissioned by East Los Angeles Repertory Theatre Company.

For over 10 years the bodies of women have been appearing in the desert just outside the border city of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Many of the women share similar traits and worked for local factories known as maquiladoras, a large number owned by American corporations. The murders remain unsolved.

Inspired by these events, the protagonist Juana Canales is a Mexican-American filmmaker documenting the murders. She interviews family members, government officials, the police, and the accused killer himself, Ali Obani. A chorus of women guide and question Juana's motives while the shadow of a horned man and a wandering woman steer her in different directions. Juana pursues the truth fervently only to be confronted with fear, lies and silence.

Roxanna herself was inspired to write a play about the killings after attending an awareness raising event at Placita Olvera. "Hundreds of names for the disappeared were exhibited, and I thought to myself what would I do if one of my sisters, friends or mother had been murdered in this way?" She decided to do what she does best, write. The play brings to light the fear, lies and silence the investigation has garnered in the past 12 years since the killings began.

Answers for the victims families and the rest of world have not been forthcoming and the killings continue to occur.

Join us for a performance that will surely inspire you to become involved in stopping violence towards women in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.
