This is the first year our legislature honors Latinos with the "Latino Spirit Awards" on Cinco de Mayo. Needless to say, I was overwhelmed that they chose me to be honored, along with Michael De Lorenzo (from Resurrection Blvd.) and Culture Clash in the field of entertainment.
However, our state assembly also recognized Latino's contributions in sports, literature and the arts. Jeff Garcia from the 49ers football team and Oscar de la Hoya were honored in sports.
Governor Davis personally gave us a plaque and shook our hands. I deliberately spoke to him in Spanish (Spanglish), saying "Governor, es un placer. Gracias."
I also added, "The sleeping giant has awakened and its presence is here today!"
(You are allowed to clap at this point)
Our state capitol was full of Latino assemblymen and women. We even had a mariachi playing right inside the state capitol. It was awesome! (I could have used a shot of tequila).
The best part, though, was calling my Papi from my cel phone and telling him I was calling from the state capitol. Then I said, "Hold on, someone wants to talk to you." I handed my cel phone to Oscar de la Hoya and had him speak to my dad! (By the way, Oscar is fighting Fernando Vargas in Las Vegas on September 14 and both Alejandro and Vicente Fernandez will be performing. It's at the Mandalay Bay...buy your tickets now!)
The definitive icing on the cake, though, was flying back to Burbank in Oscar's private plane...with Oscar de la Hoya, I might add.
