Shakira's new album, Fijacion Oral Vol.1, made history as the biggest selling Spanish-language album debut, selling 160,000 copies in its first week. The album is #1 on Billboard's Top Latin Album Charts, and #4 on The Billboard 200.

Atlantic Records has signed Puerto Rico's Tego Calderon to a long term, worldwide deal with the Reggaeton star's own Jiggiri Records label. Under the new label, Calderon will release its debut album "The Underdog" in October.

Congrats to Cafe Tacuba, who broke all attendance records when 170,000 fans showed up to their performance at the Zocalo in Mexico City on June 4th - it was outrageous! Chayanne previously held the record for attendance, drawing 150,000 fans.
Wu-Tang Latino is a new label formed by RZA of the Wu, along with Ray Acosta, former VP of Musica Latina & Marketing at UBO. The new label was launched in an effort to maintain Latino culture within the Hip Hop genre.
Sabado Gigante TV personality, Don Francisco, is donating $125,000 to La Casa del Migrante, a non-profit organization in Tijuana, Mexico. The donation was derived from profits from the "Mi Homenaje Gigante a la Musica Nortena" benefit compilation CD released last year.

Univision Communications, Inc. has come to an agreement with Nielsen Media Research, to provide comprehensive ratings for Univision's local television stations. Under the new terms, Nielsen will provide local ratings for the 34 Univision and Telefutura owned-and-operated local stations through the Nielsen Hispanic Station Index and Nielsen Station Index, including the Local People Meter service in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Chicago and Dallas.
Lupillo Rivera presented his new double disc "El Rey De Las Cantinas" with a press conference and intimate performance at the Wynn hotel in Las Vegas. Rivera performed in traditional Charro attire with Mariachi accompaniment, a first for the artist, whose new double album is also the first to feature music from both the Banda and Mariachi genres.
Chiqui Cartagena was named Managing Director, Multicultural Communications for Meredith Integrated Marketing, a new position within the company. Tower Records is targeting Latino consumers with its' "Viva La Musica!" campaign, offering its entire Latin music and DVD selection on sale at Los Angeles and Orange County Stores, and on Tower.com. The retailer will also feature several in-store appearances and performers such as Jaguares on June 21st at its Sunset Blvd. location, and free posters of Daddy Yankee, Vicente Fernandez, Julieta Venegas and other to all customers purchasing Latin titles.
Support Latin Film! The 2005 Los Angeles Film Festival takes place June 16 - 26, featuring a special CineCultura program, focusing on numerous Latino films such as La Sierra, Maid in America, Al Atro Lado and others.
English-language Latino network Si TV, received 10 Promax Award nominations for on-air promotions targeting young, urban viewers known as Generation Si. Additionally, MakinE, Si Tv's creative agency, received 6 nominations for campaigns created for the network. The Promax Awards are judged by a panel of promotion and marketing professionals, honoring overall creativity, production, quality and marketing results by companies and individuals.
Six Flags Great Adventure and Six Flags New England are hosting a special "Latino Day at Six Flags", presented by Coca-Cola and Latin Entertainment. The artist line up features stars from the Salsa, Reggaeton, Rap, Merengue and Bacahata worlds, such as Don Omar, Victor Manuelle, Cuban Link, Monchy y Alexandra, Hector el Bambino and others. Ivy Queen will be making a special appearance at the New England venue. The events take place in New Jersey on 6/18 and in Massachusetts on 6/19.

Reyes is the publisher of Dos Mundos Newspaper in Kansas City, and Sanchez is a reporter for La Voz in Phoenix, AZ.
