Sometimes your recognition lies not in your own neighborhood, but just outside of it. Los Angeles based Spanish electro/rock band Nefalim came from behind to score an upset and win Miller Lite?s rock en espanol Battle of the Bands in San Diego County. Held at Chula Vista?s famous Over the Border and playing just before event headliners Lucybell (from Chile), Nefalim won the hearts of the judges to win this prestigious honor. Judges included Univision Radio Viva 102.9 and Miller Lite representatives. The award was handed out by last year?s winner, Hijos de la Malinche, a Miller Lite rep and El Vampiro from Viva 102.9.
Immediately following their win against such favorites as Castillo (San Diego) and Orgullo Caf? (Boyle Heights), Nefalim was asked to participate in a sponsored event hosted by Univision and Viva 102.9 at the Coors Amphitheatre in Chula Vista on September 11th. They joined a lineup that featured Lu, Benny Ibarra, Elefante, Ingratos, and a host of other artists. It was Nefalim?s first show in a 20,000 capacity venue in the U.S. and they impressed their newfound San Diego fans.
Nefalim was featured on the air with live interviews on the same day in the 1 o'clock hour and the 2 o'clock hour. With an "on air" interview by the station's dj "Vampiro". Viva played several tracks off of the cd "Nefalim/Nefalim (El Che Records/Verdad Y Justicia)" and is looking forward to ?Cuatro Vientos?, a romantic ballad the audience fell in love with at the show. It is also the name of their follow up CD, which is scheduled for completion by the end of the year and is expected to be in stores in early 2006.
On the heels of this success so close to the border, Nefalim comes home to L.A. for Mexican Independence Day celebrations at the L.A. County Fair in Pomona on Saturday and Placita Olvera on Olvera Street this Sunday. They join local legends Maria Fatal and Pastilla on October 7th at the Normandie Casino in Gardena.
