Closing Reception: October 29, 2005, 1p
October 8 - 29, 2005

The Perennial Vanguard, a photo exhibit featuring work produced by Cuba's leading revolutionary photographers Liborio Noval and Perfecto Romero will open Saturday, October 8, at the Compact Space Gallery, located at 1307 South Union Avenue at Pico, in Downtown Los Angeles.

The exhibit consists of 100 black and white images and covers the period from 1958, when an adolescent Perfecto Romero joined Ernesto "Che" Guevara" as a photographer during the guerilla war in the Escambray mountains and Santa Clara, to recent encounters between presidents Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez, taken by Liborio Noval.

The Perennial Vanguard focuses on three central figures of the Cuban revolution: Fidel Castro, Ernesto Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos, and provides a broad narrative of Cuba's history and Revolution. The personal portraits of Fidel, Camilo and "Che" included in the exhibit allow the viewer to see these men beyond the legends they have become. This visual expression of the epic and continuing process that is the Cuban Revolution reaffirms the role that Fidel, Camilo and Che Guevara have served as "the perennial vanguard".

This exhibit is the culmination of the trilogy "Los Barbudos" which has featured fifteen of Cuba's most prominent photographers, all dedicated cultural workers and visual documentarians. The first and second part: "Fidel: La Historia", and "Che, y Que!", respectively, where held in Self-Help Graphics and Arts, with the full and enthusiastic support of the then SHG&A Executive Director Tomas Benitez, who, along with Paula Ramirez, a photographer herself and director of Macondo Cultural Center, unconditionally helped AMATE in order to pursue the project.

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) 2005 - Celebrate SELF HELP GRAPHICS & ART on November 2, 2005: We look forward to the community of artists again celebrating SHG&A and what is has/does mean to all of us. This is an invitation to all interested artists to again celebrate Dia de los Muertos as an artist-led event. A group of SHG&A artists have come together to celebrate Day of the Dead. It's only fitting that the tradition that was started by SHG&A artists continues. This year as we have done for over 30 years, we WILL celebrate Day of the Dead.

Any artists interested in participating please email your information to Diane Gamboa @ selfhelpartists@yahoo.com and you will be contacted with details. All other inquiries please use same email address.
