A Christmas Theatrical Tradition
The Bilingual Foundation of the Arts presents Too Many Tamales through December 30
Published on LatinoLA: December 5, 2005
The Bilingual Foundation of the Arts (BFA) presents, for the ninth consecutive year, a favorite for all ages, celebrating tradition, family and friends. Beginning Thursday, December 1st and running through Friday, December 30th, Too Many Tamales will be performed in Spanish and English at Teatro Carmen Zapata at BFA, 421 North Avenue 19 in Los Angeles.
Based on the children's book by Gary Soto, and adapted for the stage by Margarita Galban and Lina Montalvo, Too Many Tamales is filled with music, laughter and fun. The story is set on Christmas Eve: young Maria plays with her imaginary friends as her mother tends to last-minute dinner preparations. As Maria helps her mother make tamales, she discovers she has misplaced her mother's engagement ring. Believing the ring got into the masa, she convinces her cousins to eat the whole batch of tamales in an effort to find the ring. After consuming all of the family's Christmas Eve dinner, Maria learns a valuable lesson, and witnesses a Christmas miracle of love that reunites her family and brings to life her imaginary friends.
Too Many Tamales is directed and choreographed by Alejandra Flores, and the set is designed by BFA Associate Producer and Co-Founder Estela Scarlata. The lighting design is by Edward Motts, and the costumes are by Carlos Brown. The production is generously sponsored by Target and Univision Channel 34. The cast includes Eleazar del Valle, Nallely Cardona, Adriana Cornejo, Lianne Schirmer, Victoria Wills, Yesika Baker, Anthony Nelson, Michelle Correa, Jonathan Kelley, Marco Rodas, Henry Madrid, with children Camille Camino, Elisa Llamas, Robert Lehman, Gabriel Owens, Raymundo Virula, Jazmin Hernandez, Ruby Mun?z, Lizbeth Ortega, Elaine Camarena, Ashley Mun?z and Giovanna Traconis. In addition, BFA acknowledges the participation of student interns from the theater's acting classes again this year.
Performances alternate weekly in Spanish and English. The Spanish Preview is Thursday, December 1st, and the Spanish Opening Night is Friday, December 2nd. The English Preview is Thursday, December 8th, and the English Opening Night is Friday, December 9th. Performances are every Thursday and Friday evening at 8:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday performances are at 12:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. through December 30, 2005.
