On the heels of his Golden Globe win, Gustavo Santaolalla received an Oscar nomination for ?Best Original Score? for his work on Brokeback Mountain. Alberto Iglesias, who has composed soundtracks for Pedro Almodovar, was also nominated in the same category for his score for ?The Constant Gardener?.

Cristian Castro was hospitalized last week after suffering from chest pains caused by an unidentified virus. The singer was later released and found to be in perfect health.

Twentieth Television is hoping that the popularity of telenovelas with Hispanic audiences will translate to an English-speaking American audience with the upcoming series ?Desire? which is scheduled to begin June 19th. The first installment of the ?Desire? series is ?Desire: Table for Three? adapted from the Colombian series ?Mesa Para Tres?. Each ?Desire? story will last for 65 episodes. ABC and CBS are also looking to develop telenovela series.

Jessica Alba topped AskMen.com?s list of best ?long-term relationship material?. Alba beat out 98 other hopefuls for the top ranking with Sienna Miller and Angelina Jolie traling behind her.

The Sundance Film Festival wrapped up last week and the winners are in. The Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the Dramatic category went to "Quincea?era," A story of Latino teenagers growing up in Los Angeles? Echo Park. In the World Cinema Documentary category both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award went to Mexican documentaries ?In the Pit? and ?De Nadie? respectively.

Luis Miguel will have to face the music after starting a fight in a swank Aspen restaurant on January 3rd. Miguel is due to appear in court on March 1st for arraignment after a restaurant patron and the bartender pressed charges of aggression when they were allegedly assaulted after a verbal exchange turned physical.

Nissan is banking on the excitement surrounding this summer?s World Cup and the popularity of reality TV with its ?Nissan Rematch?, a five-part series of one-hour episodes, in which the players who qualified for the American and Mexican teams for 1998?s World Cup will be persuaded to join their former teammates in training sessions and practices for a rematch on May 21st. The show will air weekly with two reruns starting in April on Fox Sports en Espa?ol.

As part of the launch of the second leg of his ?Mi Sangre? tour, Juanesreceived both a double-diamond record for worldwide sales exceeding 2 million copies of ?Mi Sangre? and a quadruple platinum award for over 900,000 copies of the album sold in the United States.

Warner Independent Pictures and Alfonso Cuaron?s Esperanto Films will release Fernando Eimbcke?s Duck Season (Temporada de Patos )on March 10th. The film won several Ariel Awards and also won the Grand Jury Prize at AFI Fest among other awards. The film score was composed by Plastilina Mosh?s Alejandro Rosso, which won an Ariel and Best Score at the Guadalajara Film Festival.

TNS Media Intelligence is forecasting 10.4% growth for Spanish-language network TV in 2006 as advertisers prepare for soccer?s World Cup. Jon Swallen, TNS? senior VP-director of research predicts World Cup advertising revenue for Univision will be at or possibly above $200 million.

Schafik Handal, the leader of the Salvadoran left and an ex-guerrilla commander who fought U.S.-backed government troops during the country's 12-year civil war, died at age 75 from a heart attack shortly after he returned from a trip to Bolivia in which he attended the inauguration ceremony for Bolivian President Evo Morales.

Fox Pan American Sports today announced it has finalized a licensing agreement with Cuatro Media to produce and distribute a magazine called Fox Sports en Espa?ol. The Spanish-language monthly magazine will be available in New York, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, Dallas and Houston through Hispanic newspapers and debuts March 23, 2006.

Grammy-winning Latin jazz percussionist Ray Barretto, who had open-heart surgery last week, may face another operation after complaining of chest pains. The 76 year-old Barretto is in stable condition following the surgery. We wish him a speedy recovery.

ImpreMedia announced its purchase of La Prensa, adding the Orlando-based publication to its roster which already includes the New York dailies El Diario/La Prensa and Los Angeles? La Opinion.

The line-up for this year?s Coachella Music Festival was announced this week. Headliners Depeche Mode and Tool will be joined by Los Amigos Invisibles, the Manu Chao-produced Senegalese duo Amadou & Mariam and Seu Jorge.

The 57th Caribbean World Series of baseball, to be held next month in Venezuela, will be televised for the eighth consecutive year on Fox Sports en Espa?ol. The series kicks off on February 2nd with a match-up between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, and defending champion Mexico takes on host Venezuela later that day.
