It seems Los Angeles Latinos have developed a new habit: They like a shot of Mabel Katz with their morning cup of coffee. Mabel Katz is a bilingual author, speaker, and host of the popular TV Show Despertar (Awakening) with Mabel Katz, which airs Monday thru Friday at 6:00am on KWHY (Channel 22) Telemundo, a Los Angeles Spanish-language broadcasting station.

The half-hour daily television show finds Mabel helping her audience deal with life's issues and problems in a dynamic and inspiring manner. There are no elaborate sets, just Mabel and her guests like the beautiful singer/actress Maria Conchita Alonso, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and other prominent Latinos who share how they've overcome obstacles and inspire viewers to tackle a variety of universal problems, including relationship, organizational, emotional, interpersonal and financial challenges.

"The intent is to show Latinos, that if they have a dream and believe in themselves, they too can reach their goals for success," says Mabel, "The reality is that no matter where you come from or who you are, success, prosperity, and happiness can be yours. Many of my celebritity guests came from poor families, with little more than hope and dreams."

Morning TV is an appealing way for Mabel to reach her audience. The number of working women who watch TV at 6 a.m. has increased by more than 80 percent in the last decade and more people are watching TV earlier because the commute time is getting longer as more workers are living further away from their workplaces. Audiences are "fresh" at that time and for busy professionals, morning TV is a convenient way to get information.

"TV, unlike the newspaper or the Internet, allows viewers to multitask," says Mabel, "It's a lot easier to turn on the television in the morning and watch while getting dressed or preparing the kids for school, than to do these tasks while reading a newspaper."

Indeed, the early risers who switch on Despertar every morning are responding to Mabel?s passion to ?awaken? her audience ?- to not only educate, but to also motivate and encourage latinos. Tackling life's challenges such as one's starting a business or buying a first home with Mabel's TV information and inspiration, viewers develop an intimate relationship with Mabel herself and often write her to share how their lives have changed for the better since they began tuning in.
