Music & Laughter in the Rain
All dressed up and looking good on a memorable LatinoLA weekend
The rainy season in Aztlan is upon us. Like a gentle misty cleansing of the air...or outright thunderstorms and flooding...the bottom line is that we're all getting a little wet in the Land of 1000 Dances, but no biggy.

Not that that slows the Gente down, as we are people of the Land, and we love our weekends and good times, weather notwithstanding.
The weekends start on Thursdays in L.A. First, my 2nd Time Around Show on www.kclafm.com, which as of this week is now simulcast on XM satellite radio. The finest Chicano sounds on the World Wide Web are now on the World wide satellite airwaves.
Afterwards, Thee Mr. Duran hosts "Montebello Thursdays" at the Montebello Inn. Last week, The SATISFACTION BAND and The SR80 Band brought the Gente in out of the cold. After that, comedian Rudy Moreno hosts the Joker's Club at the Commerce Casino, where it's always a party.
And that's just Thursday!
This past Friday, Mr. Gilbert Esquivel (pictured), "the Crown Prince of Chicano Comedy" packed 'em in on a rainy night at The Odyssey Restaurant & Ballroom in the San Fernando Valley with his Old School Music & Comedy Revue Show. Sold out for the third straight time, the Gente of the Valley fell out en masse, all dressed up, and looking good! EVERYBODY was laughing & dancing, as it was a night of love & reunions. WAR drummer Sal Rodriguez dropped by, singing a couple of tunes & sharing a couple of jokes with Gilbert on stage. I guesstimate about 500 people attended this one, and Gilbert's parties get bigger every time.
Then Saturday, WAR came to town, as Rick Ortiz Productions lit up the main upstairs ballroom for about 700 of his closet friends, which included the new Chicano group INNER CITY SOUL, a young group of homies that "wowed" everybody with their hard hitting rock-reggea-soul-ska-latin soul sounds that was a unique treat, if you've never heard this combination.
Then, WAR came on stage to a standing ovation, playing all their hits, each one drawing louder cheers, as the hometown crowd of East L.A. were in the mood to party!.
I ran into music producers Steven Chavez & his wife Janie, Phillip Reyes of Souvenir Entertainment, and "East L.A. Rey" Garza, along with Richard "THEE MR." Duran and his wife Pat, Thee MIDNITER great, drummer George Salazar & his wife Lisa, comedian Gilbert Esquivel, and KUCR FM's Angel "Baby" Rodriguez and his Lady, all enjoying the show, all sharing the love of music that typifies Aztlan....everybody having a good time, and NO problems!
A ver what goes down next weekend. Whatever it may be, you'll hear about it from Frankie Firme and LatinoLA.com .
