5,000 L.A. youth run Nike Cinco de Mile

Kicking It Off

More than 5,000 Los Angeles-area youth laced up their running shoes in the second annual Nike Cinco de Mile ? a free, one-mile run at Placita Olvera in downtown L.A. celebrating youth activity and community. Youth from Los Angeles Unified School District, LA Bridges and Boys & Girls Clubs of L.A were joined by renowned actor Wilmer Valderrama, Patricia Lopez from LATV, skate boarding sensation Paul Rodriguez, Jr., Mexican women?s national soccer team captain Monica Gonzales and Councilmember Jos? Huizar from the 14th District.

Through this initiative Nike will donate $10,000 each to ten local elementary schools to support P.E. programs through NikeGO PE, a program in conjunction with the nonprofit, Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids (SPARK), designed to increase the quality and quantity of physical activity in America's schools. The ten elementary schools benefiting from this year?s donation through NikeGO PE at Cinco de Mile are: Chatsworth, Andasol, Stonehurt, San Fernando, Hyde Park, Fairburn, Holmes, Loren Miller, Raymond Ave and 153rd. All are elementary schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

?It?s important for all people, young and old to include physical activity in their everyday lives. Now with the help of companies such as Nike, we can all participate and encourage our young people to take the extra mile for a better, healthier lifestyle,? said Councilman Jos? Huizar District 14.

Youth were treated to a post-run concert by L.A.?s very own Grammy? Award-winning group Ozomatli, hip hop artist ADASSA, and DJ Kaleem plus a skateboarding and BMX exhibition featuring some of L.A.?s hottest riders. All participants received a free Nike t-shirt and a finisher?s medal. Special certificates were given to the top 3 male and female runners in 7 categories.

The Nike Cinco de Mile was held in conjunction with Fiesta Broadway, one of the most recognized and popular celebrations of Cinco de Mayo (Fifth of May). Now in its seventeenth year, Fiesta Broadway annually attracts over 500,000 participants from throughout Southern California to the 36-block party in downtown Los Angeles.
