News from the Brown Side of Town - 10.21.06

Orale, Mi Gente...times are coming that signal cool weather, warm clothes (catch you next summer, mis hermanas!), trick or treat, the World Series, fall elections, new TV shows, homecoming games, proms, & dances (if you have teenagers in the house), and a temporary halt to outdoor concerts and events in the Land of 1000 Dances.

Pero no te precupes! The indoor action in Aztlan is still hot, as always, and the music NEVER dies!...quote me!

As we all know, the "Palabra" is always found here, on LatinoLA.com, where it's ALWAYS a BROWN thing, baby! Let everybody know...if it ain't here, it ain't happening!

And the best Chicano music is found every Thursday at 6:00 pm, live, on www.kclafm.com with Frankie Firme, and on pre-recorded 3 hour loops on www.chicanoexpress.com with the Godfather of Tejano-Chicano music, "Crazy Chuy" Hernandez 24/7, and now, special archived Frankie Firme shows and rare East Side Sounds on www.eastLArevue.com 24/7, courtesy of Steven & Janie Chavez.

...whoever said "you can't ever get too much of a good thing" must have been in love with a BROWN woman and Chicano Music...know what I mean?

At one of the few outdoor parties last weekend in the San Fernando Valley, word on the street has it that Thee Midniters founding fathers George Salazar and Benny Lopez made a surprise appearance and helped preview their new group's CD entitled "Midnite's Moon~ A new moon's rizing", a compilation of 12 original cuts that got some VERY favorable response. Midnite's Moon rehearses on stage every Saturday afternoon from 12 noon to 3:oopm at the Montebello Inn, and the public is invited. Admission and parking are free.

Rumors have it that the SATISFACTION Band hooked some heavy attention from somebody outside of the Land of 1000 Dances, and have taken to the road on a brief concert tour. Details are sketchy at the moment, but reliable sources spotted Chris Reserva and Jimmy Silva exiting a travel agency with a bundle of tickets and big smiles....hmmm...I tried to get some 411 in a phone interview with Chris Reserva, but all he told me was "See you around the middle of November, Frankie".

Drummer and former leader of the Night Flight Band, Peter Jaramillo has taken a page out of Steven Chavez's playbook and has become quite the promoter . He's locking down Friday nights at the Whittier Radisson Hotel Lounge with hot acts like SUAVE, SMOOTH TOUCH, SANGRIA, JUMPIN'JACK BENNY, and I finally squeezed it out of him, he's booked the finest Chicano Blues band on the planet, the BLUES STRAIGHT UP Band, on December 17th. The Whittier Radisson just may become the next Chicano hot spot for that cool, good looking, classy, and sexy 40 and over Chicano crowd.

Orale!(You know I'll there!) For more info, and maybe a few discount tickets, give Peter a call at (626) 488-3344, and tell him you heard it from Frankie Firme & LatinoLA!
....maybe you got a band that's good enough to play in the Land of 1000 Dances?....

Getting word from outside sources that 2 of L.A.'s up and coming Chicana divas are just getting too much attention to avoid each other in the Land of 1000 Dances. I don't know about you, but I'm watering at the mouth for (what I'm told is coming) new recorded music by Melinda Del Toro and Claudia Gonzalez . I've had the pleasure of working with and hearing the dynamic yet angelic voice of Ms. Del Toro...and I'm getting a lot of word about Ms. Gonzalez, but I haven't heard her yet. Somebody please....hmmm...remember a couple of years ago when (then) new Chicana divas Eileen Benavides of the SATISFACTION Band and Maria Conchita Sandoval of the EAST L.A. REVUE ALL STAR BAND busted it wide open an stole hearts in the Land of 1000 Dances? Sounds like another showdown may be in the works...hmmm...I get a sneaky feeling Steven Chavez may be behind the scenes of this one....

And speaking of dynamic female artists, I haven't heard of any females kicking it up and leading their own bands since this Summer's sizzling sistas of Salsa, Leslie Paula and Susie Hansen. These babes can sing, dance, and lead their own bands in 4 inch high heels (with Susie jammin' on a violin), and I ponder the absence of more female band leaders, until now...just getting wind of a lightning Lady from the San Francisco Bay area, home of the likes of Emilio Castillo, Jeff Eaton, Mic Gillette, Doc Kupka, et al, who is giving new meaning to the term "Lady band leader".

Sonya Jason, aka "the Tigress" (pictured) has shown to be a most masterful saxophone player and band leader. Her sounds are smooth and seductive, yet raw and scorching. For the hot-band-with-brass affectionado, home girl is it! At the time of this writing, new works are in the process, so I'll cut it short for now by just saying wow! Home~girl can play! I invite you to check out her website at: www.sonyajason.com ...you will be surprised!

Been getting some flak about last week's poll on the current solo performing Veterano of West Coast Chicano Soul ~ and both these guys are good!

Who's 2006 CD carries more juice? Pepe Marquez or Steve Salas? Hmmm....let's have some action. Email you vote and requests to: FrankieFirme@yahoo.com. I'll have the results, AND the music on this week's 2nd Time Around Show.

As always, always, always...I ask you to keep a prayer in your heart for our troops in Iraq, the Armed Forces of the United States. Not the politicians, and not the leaders behind desks and cameras...but the Men & Women on the front lines.

I think keeping a War going to get re-elected is a stupid, selfish thing to do...but you ultimately have to vote your conscience...please consider this!

Our brave Men & Women serving over in harm's way didn't ask to go, but never said "no", when it was time to show....DON'T YOU FORGET THEM!!!!

Ay te wacho, from the Land of 1000 Dances ~
