Latinos among this year‘«÷s Golden Globe winners included Alejandro Gonzalez I??arritu, for Best Film Drama for ‘«£Babel‘«ō, ABC‘«÷s ‘«£Ugly Betty‘«ō (executive produced by Salma Hayek), Best Television Series- Musical or Comedy and the show‘«÷s star America Ferrera who won for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series- Musical or Comedy.

It was reported in Spanish newspapers that Fidel Castro is apparently in ‘«£grave condition‘«ō due to an infection in the Cuban leader‘«÷s large intestine and three failed surgeries.

Los Angeles-based LATV has inked a multi-city affiliation deal with Post-Newsweek Stations. LATV will now air in about 8 million cable and broadcast homes across the country adding Houston, Miami, Orlando and San Antonio as new markets.

BMI will honor Los Tigres del Norte as icons at this year‘«÷s Latin Awards taking place March 23rd in Las Vegas.

Mexican rock group Molotov announced its intentions to break up. Apparently creative differences and exhaustive touring were cited as reasons by members of the group.

ABC‘«÷s ‘«£Ugly Betty‘«ō is the best ad deal on primetime network TV at just $1.85 per 100 viewers. This compares to the Fox‘«÷s ‘«£The Simpsons‘«ō at $5.23.

Sergio Jimenez, director of the popular Mexican telenovela ‘«£La Fea M?Ūs Bella‘«ō, died of a heart attack last week at age 69. Jimenez was found in his apartment after he did not show up for work.

Jennifer Lopez has signed on with Irving Azoff‘«÷s management company for music representation. Lopez‘«÷ Spanish-language album is slated for release in March with an English-language album to follow.

Univision Radio has expanded its ‘«£Piolin por la ma??ana‘«ō morning show into 8 new markets including New York, Chicago, San Diego, San Antonio and El Paso to make a total of 24 markets across the country.

‘«£Bandidas‘«ō starring Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek as bank robbers in turn of the century Mexico, is now available on DVD. ‘«£Quincea??era‘«ō is also now on DVD telling the story of a Los Angeles teenager coming of age and facing teen pregnancy.

The Latin Recording Academy announced some restructuring this week. Aida Scorza has been promoted to VP of Awards, while Louis Dousdebes has been appointed CFO. Marco Sagrera is now Senior Manager and Livys Cerna is Administrative Coordinator.

Sol Dance Film Fiesta will take place January 21-23rd in Midway, Utah screening independent films from Latino and Native American filmmakers.

‘«£In the Heights‘«ō, a musical set in New York‘«÷s Washington Heights, opens February 8th at 37 Arts Theater in New York. The story stars Lin-Manuel Miranda who also wrote the music and lyrics.

Fernando Araujo escaped his FARC kidnappers in Colombia this week after a six-year ordeal. Over his six years in captivity, Araujo was able to maintain contact with loved ones through messages they sent over the RCN radio network.

Grupo Gallegos is opening an office in Buenos Aires this month. The California-based agency will work with a creative team in Buenos Aires to service the agency‘«÷s U.S. accounts.

Ex-Nuevo Herald cartoonist Jose Varela sold off his signed and autographed artwork over the weekend to raise funds for his defense. Varela is facing charges of aggravated assault after taking over the El Nuevo Herald and Miami Herald offices last November with a toy gun in order to air his grievances.

AOL Latino and Verizon Wireless have partnered to create the ‘«£Top 11 AOL Latino Countdown‘«ō. The online show will feature artists selected by fans on the site.
