Eastside Land

Under the California sun

Eastside Land

The Whittier Blvd sign shines bright in the California sun
And illuminates brown faces full of pride
"This is where we settled!" they scream loud and clear,
Just in case you didn't want to hear.
We've come from places far away that we may forget over the years,
But they lie in our hearts, very much alive and fueling the passion that lives inside.

The Whittier Blvd sign shines bright in the California sun
And listens to steady and resilient messages of those who walk by and boldly state
This is where we have settled and this is where we have decided to make a difference
In the lives of all that walk under this silver sign
She has seen the slow and steady dance of the zoot suiter
And the quick and easy glide of the skaters that ride by
She has heard the resonant cry of the tamal and elote vendors
And the sweet sound of bells from the paleteros.

The Whittier Blvd sign shines bright in the California sun
And remembers the heroes, past and present
Salazar, Chavez and Huerta. Escalante, Molina and Roybal.
And all who heard our voice of struggle and desire and boldly
Took it places and transformed it into a "?íSi, Se Puede!" cry.

The Whittier Blvd sign shines bright in the California sun
And is joined by the colors of the murals full of color and song
Who will be happy to tell you the events that shaped this eastside land
She knows every moment of frustration and disappointment
But cherishes most the moments of victory under this California sun.
