Happenings in the Land of 1000 Dances
Orale, mi Gente! If not for a little controversy, life would be boring, que~no? The City of Angels,in the Land of 1000 Dances, Southside Kali, is no exception.
Published on LatinoLA: June 13, 2007
Political scandals, police brutality at public demonstrations, school board and real estate rip offs, huge undeserved pay raises for public administrators....what else could chap our chonies as the majority of us go about the daily good fight of working, taking care of our families, and dealing with the unfairness of the real world designated to us people of color?
Ahhh...but the rich have their ways of circumventing the laws of the land that makes me mad, and I wonder just who the laws were intended for....know what I mean?
Paris Hilton, a rich California gabacha bottle blonde who can afford blue contact lenses and the best plastic surgery in the world, and whose only claim to fame & riches is being the offspring of a hotel magnate, got a "get out of jail free" pass , courtesy of our judicial system and law enforcement establishment....while members of our minority & working class communities continue to languish and suffer in jail cells for lesser offenses than Princess Paris was convicted for...hey, didn't a Chicano Iraq War veteran just get shot 3 times point blank for just standing up during a traffic stop by police? Is it any wonder why gang activity is so popular?
I mean, home~girl gets busted in L.A. twice drunk driving, then gets busted in L.A. a third time for DUI with a suspended license, gets a reduced sentence, gets special visits in the County Jail from family, friends, and a psychiatrist like nobody else ever does, then walks after only 3 days! How can anybody explain this to us with a straight face? (hmmm...I wonder if she was ever handcuffed and forced to sit on a curb in traffic for all to see & gawk at? And why did SHE get out of the body cavity search?)
Reminds me of an old saying a veterano told me many years ago while I was a "visitor" at one of L.A. County's finer facilities in my younger days: "If you're rich and white, you get tried by justice....if you're not rich, and you're Brown or Black, you get tried by the law...." ...Oh well, maybe we should all try blue contact lenses if we ever go to court, no? Racial equality just got set back another decade.
Only in L.A., baby! And now, a little positive vibe for the Gente Brown in the Land of 1000 Dances, as the Goddess of Ritmo softly blows fresh breezes of love, laughter, and song over the land that is Atzlan... watcha:
Response was positive in L.A. for the nationally televised 2007 ALMA Awards (pictured), which finally shined the light on West Coast Chicanos that don't have a commercial stereotypical accent. I like that! I also appreciate that! I don't speak with an accent! Congratulations to Edward James Olmos, Moctezuma Esparza, Sal Castro and all the participants of the 1968 East L.A. High School student walkouts that helped jump start the Chicano Movimiento. Your story was finally told, thanks to HBO.
