Dare to Dream

Don't let where you came from dictate who you are, but let it be part of who you become

Dare to Dream

Hello to my family, friends and extended community,

In this day and age, Hispanics are no longer content with living a mediocre lifestyle or being the underdog. Many of us have learned the hard way that there is more than living hand to mouth and paycheck to paycheck, performing back breaking work for chump change, and the mere hopes of, maybe, a high school education. Finally, after decades and decades of barely scraping by, the tables are beginning to turn. We are everywhere and we are defying the odds and going for the gold. But too many of us are still being left behind. Nearly one in five Latino households (18 percent) and more than one in five Latino families with children (22 percent) have difficulty affording adequate food. Gang violence is out of control and teenage pregnancy among Latinos is at an all time high. Having been stabbed, shot at, and involved in drugs, I changed the direction of my life to become a successful business owner. Now I want to reach out to our kids and point them down the right path before it's too late.

As some of you might know, I've spent a good majority of the past year working with a writing company to create a book about my journey as a man, entrepreneur, and Latino that spans my life literally From the Barrio to the Board Room. This book is my life's work. It is something I've been wanting to do for a while; my way of returning to my culture what I was given by my culture: persistence and pride. My book's message is clear: "Don't let where you came from dictate who you are, but let it be part of who you become."

I am at the point where I need your help. Latino authors are few and far between and book stores do not carry many books like mine. But this message is of huge importance to our Latino youth, and to anyone chasing the American Dream. To that end, what we are trying to do is create a massive community of people who believe in this book so that we can get both English and Spanish versions into the book stores.

How can you help? Believe it or not I have entered the 21st century with a website and MySpace page for the book. Please go to the website at www.fromthebarrio.com, sign up for the sample excerpt, and if you are inclined, pre-order the book. Then check out our MySpace page at www.myspace.com/fromthebarrio, and become my friend. You will find tons of media treats on this page (audio/video interview, excerpts from the book, photos, etc). Then please - and this is important - pass along this message to at least ten others who would want to support this cause. If we can build a strong community around this message, we will have a more powerful voice towards getting it into as many hands as possible.

I truly thank all of you who have given to me through your friendship, your support, and even to those who do not know me, but are reading this message and considering becoming a part of this journey. Please except my invitation to give back to our community.

Dare to Dream,
Robert J. Renteria Jr.
