Viver Brasil Dance Company invites audiences to an exhilarating and unforgettable tenth anniversary celebration under the stars at the Ford Amphitheatre on Friday, September 7 at 8:30 pm. With "Xir?¬!Celebrations," Viver Brasil rejoices in life, love and a decade of heart-stopping dedication to the arts of Bahia.
For ten years Viver Brasil has explored ancient and contemporary art forms and the spiritual strength of Brazilian culture through breathtaking and passionate Afro Brazilian dance and live music. Now, Xir?¬ (pronounced She-RAY) promises to be its most explosive show yet. Resident choreographer Luiz Badar??, a recipient of a generous Dance: Creation to Performance grant from The James Irvine Foundation, and guest choreographer Rosangela Silvestre experiment with traditional stories, legends and myths, infusing them with the intoxicating movements, colors and sounds of contemporary Brazil.
"We are proud of our many accomplishments over the past decade," says Linda Yudin, who shares artistic director duties with Badar??. "This concert marks our fifth appearance at the Ford, and we're thrilled to be back. We've just completed our first national tour as well as a tour of Northern California, and we've performed at landmark venues like the Hollywood Bowl, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Walt Disney Concert Hall. This year, we were nominated for the prestigious Lester Horton Award for Best Achievement in Company Performance."
Annual trips to Brazil by many of the company members refresh and refine Viver Brasil's repertoire, which embodies the spirit and expressive Afro-Brazilian culture of Northeastern Brazil. New company members this season include Willy Souly from Burkino Faso in West Africa and guest musical director Jose Ricardo Sousa, a member of Brazil's acclaimed Bale Folclorico da Bahia.
The LA Weekly calls Viver Brasil "Breathless and colorful... from the first sound of the atabaque drums, a surge of electricity sweeps through the audience." Wrote the Los Angeles Times, "If the members' exuberance could be bottled, Viver Brasil would be the drink of choice."
The creation and production of "Xir?¬!Celebrations" was made possible in part by funding received from the Dance: Creation to Performance program, funded by The James Irvine Foundation and administered by Dance/USA. In addition, "Xir?¬!Celebrations" is sponsored in part by Aeromexico; the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs; Remo, Inc.; Cheviot Hills Travel Service; Dance Arts Academy; Soul Brasil Magazine; and pelourinho.com. "Xir?¬!Celebrations" is part of the Ford Amphitheatre 2007 Season, a multi-disciplinary arts series produced by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission in cooperation with Los Angeles County-based arts organizations.
"Xir?¬!Celebrations" takes place on Friday, September 7 at 8:30 pm. For more information and tickets, call (323) 461-3673 or go to www.FordTheatres.org.
