News from the Brown Side of Town, August 1

?íOrale, mi Gente!!

Took a little time off to catch up with Gente up in Northern Califas, and I got lost in time. I came back to rumors that I either died, got arrested, got deported, got married, or I'm still in a long line at the DMV getting my tags renewed.

None of them are true...my Lady & I just celebrated the arrival of a new grandson, and new, fresh shows are coming on the East L.A. Revue Internet Jukebox and Chicano Express Radio.

Thank you all, ever so much for the letters of concern. It's so nice to be missed!

So....what's been happening in the Land of 1000 Dances? Watcha...

As expected, the MIDNITES MOON CD release party was all the way live, as a good sized crowd made it out to CAMACHO's in the City of Industry a couple of Fridays ago. Thee Midniter's original members & founding fathers Benny Lopez & George Salazar showed everyone that even though they hadn't performed on stage together since 1966, they still got it! The Lil' Heartbreakers former lead singer Eddie Rodriguez wowed 'em all with some stinging percussion as well as some classic ballads crooning. Afterwards, Benny Lopez & George Salazar mixed it up on the dance floor and promised future performances. I was honored to serve as House DJ and host, and welcomed such guests as Mike Rincon of the Blues Straight Up Band, Steven Chavez of Rampart Records, and Chris Reserva of the Satisfaction Band. A couple of weeks later, I caught up with the BLUES STRAIGHT UP Band as they entertained a mellow summer crowd at one of East L.A.'s best kept secrets: the Redwood Room on Slauson Avenue in Maywood. Free bar-b-que all night long, ice cold beer, a good crowd of good people, the live sounds of the finest Chicano Blues band on the Planet, featuring the seductive & sensual vocals of the one & only Lava Gonzalez, made it one of my best Saturday nights this summer. There just isn't anything to compare to Chicano style Blues on a summer evening in L.A. with the BLUES STRAIGHT UP Band. New keyboardist Jaime Avila showed his stuff and proved he can hang with the veteranos as he busted out with some clean solos, much to the delight of the crowd. For more info on future performances: www.bluesstraightup.com .

I know you all heard about the welcome Chicano Music invasion from the North as the KOOL KATZ came to town, courtesy of Steven Chavez, Peter Jaramillo, and Cory Silva. Rumors have it that they will be returning to the Land of 1000 Dances for another big show with more big names. For more info: stevenchavez68@hotmail.com .

The Whittier Radisson Hotel & Lounge continues to be one of L.A.'s hot spots, with the likes of MALO, SUAVE, DOWN WITH 3, SATISFACTION, and now, the KOOL KATZ packing dance floors and drawing Gente from all over. SUSIE HANSEN & her band have also landed in Peter Jaramillo's backyard for the Summer Salsa series, and he cordially invites you all to come on down for more of his special shows. Rumors have it that Peter Jaramillo & Cory Silva have joined forces, and A BIG ONE is being planned for September 2nd...and more info is available at: www.jegrp.com .

As expected, Montebello's THE WISEGUYS sold out and packed BB King's at the Universal Citywalk, proving that the big band sound is alive and well in the Land of 1000 Dances. These guys ARE coming up, and I heavily encourage you all to check them out! For more info on the WISEGUYS: www.mtbwiseguys.org .

Not to be left out or forgotten by any means whatsoever, the San Fernando Valley's COMPANY BAND, featuring the gorgeous & talented BECKY CORDOVA, continue to turn heads, open eyes, and make it a party everyewhere they go. Packing houses at the Santa Fe Springs Swap meet, the Saddleback Inn, The Presidente in Northridge, then taking the L.A. love up north to Santa Barbara, the COMPANY Band helps make L.A. the Land of 1000 Dances. They were recently joined by special guests JOHNNY HERNANDEZ of Texas, and Angel Sabroso for some impromptu jamming for an unsuspecting and pleased crowd at the Presidente as Johnny announced the release of his new CD. THE COMPANY will be performing at the Commerce Casino soon, where a good crowd of L.A.'s faithful is expected. Midnight Production's Cory Silva, riding high on a wave of Brown pride after his killer 60's & 70's Tribute show last month, has another blockbuster in the works. " I know my people love the Old School killer jams, and sometimes, a DJ just isn't enough. It's the live performances that keep the people happy & stepping out, so it's live shows we're bringing to the people" Cory proudly announces. For more info: www.midnightproductions2.com . Frankie Firme will be in the house.

Tia Chucha's Art & Cultural Center of the San Fernando Valley continue to gain support and momentum in seeking a bigger, permanent home for the rich culture, art, and music that is everything CHICANO, by hosting a special fundraiser at the Amanson~Ford Theater in Hollywood featuring Chicano Music legend TIERRA, and comedian Ernie "G". Support is still needed and very much welcomed. For more info: info@tiachucha.com
