You Can Do It, Oscar!

Boxing fans, are you wondering what Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya is up to these days? You?re probably thinking that after that incredible fight against Fernando Vargas, he?d be vacationing somewhere around the world, right?

Wrong!

Last week he was back in his home town -- Los Angeles -- in a special appearance at la Placita Olvera for a press conference.

Since nuestro editor has todas las conexciones, LatinoLA was there to get the scoop for you. After waiting under the hot sun for what supposed to be a 10-minute wait -- which turned into 30 minutes -- Oscar De La Hoya finally arrived.

His name was being shouted out by many of his fans. People were pushing and shoving each other just to get a glance at him. Those closest to him, like myself, were getting pushed forward and sideways. Soon thereafter, I began pushing back. I had no choice but to stand my ground or else get trampled to the ground. This I do, only for LatinoLA and its Amigos.

So that his overly thrilled fans wouldn?t mob Oscar, the organizers had set a three-foot fence along the walkway for everyone?s safety. Fans didn?t care about the fence, they were leaning all over it, they kept snapping pictures and screaming ?Oscar, Oscar, Oscar.? You could hear their screams over the Mariachi welcoming De La Hoya.

As Oscar made his way to the podium he stopped to sign autographs and posed with fans. He was genuinely charismatic with the public and was all smiles. I saw him up close and this guy is good-looking! Not that he was ever bad-looking but it?s different when you see them in person. You?re either disappointed or impressed by them.

I gave him the thumbs up.

The press conference got underway and we soon learned that Oscar De La Hoya will star in a new role outside the ring.

No, he is not coming out with a new album nor is he auditioning for roles in television or film. Oscar is suiting up for his new role as president of Golden Boy Promotions, LLC, a California-based promotional company.

Could things get any better for Oscar? He?s already a wealthy boxer and is now the top honcho businessman making the executive decisions at Golden Boy Promotions.

What?s next? Retirement?

Yes, it?s something he?s thought about but feels he still has a couple of good fights left in him before he hangs the gloves.

His latest venture is with HBO Latino. Oscar?s Golden Boy Promotions has partnered with the Spanish-language channel to bring a new boxing series.

?Oscar De La Hoya Presenta Boxeo de Oro? -- the series airing only on HBO Latino -- will feature up-and-coming Latino fighters from various backgrounds. The monthly boxing series is set to air January 2003. Fights will air live on Thursday nights.

The association between Oscar and HBO Latino was received with applause from the audience. What really got the crowd excited was when Oscar said he was heading straight to Puerto Rico to talk with Felix "Tito" Trinidad about a possible fight.

The crowd went crazy cheering. ?You can do it. Oscar!? screamed a fan.

Oscar made it clear to the public that he wants those world titles back. His confidence and determination were apparent; it seems the fight against Vargas pumped him up to a different level.

He wants Tito Trinidad to come back from his retirement for one more fight. He has two fights pending, one with Tito and the other with ?Sugar? Shane Mosley. Oscar assured his fans that these were fights he?s looking forward to and hopes to recapture the titles.
