Consecutive Oppression

A federal appeals court Thursday rejected American Indian activist Leonard Peltier's request for reductions in the two consecutive life sentences he got in the 1975 killings of two FBI agents, saying the appeal came far too late.

An attorney for Peltier has argued that ballistics evidence not considered by his client's sentencing judge could have led to two concurrent life sentences, not the back-to-back ones Peltier has been serving since his1977 conviction and sentencing.

Under concurrent terms, his attorney has argued, Peltier would have been
eligible for parole a decade ago. Now federally imprisoned in Leavenworth,
Kan., Peltier is scheduled for his next full parole hearing in 2008.

Consecutive Oppression
[ For Leonard Peltier ]

510 years of consecutive oppression,
passed down to Leonard
and all his relations,

evidence ignored
or constructed to convict
Red Nation children,

deaf ears and blind eyes
are the resources
of selective vision clad judges,

the calvary dressed in FBI issue,
circle the courts
for another massacre,

prosecutors rehash old lies,
exempt from truth,
lay down with lady injustice,

the court is sound proof,
drums of resistance
are indicted for upsetting silence,

drums for Peltier,
drums for Red Nations,
live in the generations,

reminder to the oppressors
that they are discovered,
their hate has no mask,

Leonard is consecutively convicted,
consecutively denied parole,
his exile is concurrently consecutive,

he was lied out of Canada,
he was lied into prison,
justice, another treaty never realized,

First Nation land is stolen, consecutively,
First Nation relations are imprisoned, consecutively,
this genocide is not arrested, convicted, imprisoned,

our brother Leonard waits for us,
our consecutive support,
his freedom, a dream that will be realized,

we enter this new time
filled with old dreams,
where we dance with Leonard,

circle of hope
that must not die,
we are his consecutive relations ~
