Miss Venezuela Crowned Miss Universe

Miss Venezuela, Dayana Mendoza, was crowned Miss Universe this weekend. Four of the five final contestants were from Latin America including Miss Mexico, Miss Dominican Republic, Miss Colombia and Miss Venezuela.

Telemundo‘«÷s broadcast of the 2008 Miss Universe Pageant delivered over 2 million total viewers, making it the #1 broadcast in its time period on Spanish-language broadcast TV among Adults 18-49, Women 18-49 and Women 18-34.

The NYILFF (New York International Latino Film Festival) announced this year‘«÷s complete lineup of films and events. This year‘«÷s opening film is ‘«£American Son‘«ō, directed by Neil Abramson and starring Nick Cannon, Melonie Diaz and Jay Hernandez, while the closing film, ‘«£The Ministers‘«ō, is directed by Franc Reyes and stars John Leguizamo and Harvey Keitel. Shakira has inked a multi-million dollar deal with Live Nation which includes new albums, touring, merchandise, websites and film. The deal is estimated to be anywhere between $70-$100 million.

John McCain has launched a new Spanish-language radio ad airing in Nevada and New Mexico called ‘«£Our Values‘«ō. The voiceover is done by McCain‘«÷s former roommate at the U.S. Naval Academy, Frank Gamboa.

According to recent data from Nielsen Monitor Plus, ad spending on Spanish-language cable in 2007 was up 76% over 2006 to $220.7 million. Much of the jump can be attributed to mun2 and Fox Sports en Espa??ol being added to the mix. Without the addition of these two networks, the increase would have been 32%.

Disney is set to release ‘«£High School Musical: El Desafio‘«ō, which has been produced for Mexico and Argentina with Brazil to follow later. Each version features a local cast, its own distinct script and soundtrack. The film releases July 17th in Argentina and September 5th in Mexico.

New Menudo member Carlos Olivero was escorted off of a Delta flight this week when he refused to stow his iPod after being asked by a stewardess.

PBS has partnered with People en Espa??ol and the Smithsonian Latino Center to air ‘«£Latin Music USA‘«ō. The series will cover the history and development of Latin music in America across a variety of genres like Jazz, Salsa, Tejano, Rock, Pop and Reggaeton. "Latin Music USA" will air in two parts on January 21st and January 28th.

Multimedia company Voy LLC is up for sale. CEO and founder Fernando Espuelas is currently considering several offers. Voymusic.com reported 2.2 million unique visitors in June.

La Oreja de Van Gogh announced that Leire Martinez will be the group‘«÷s new vocalist. The band‘«÷s new album is set for release on September 2nd.

Yonkers, New York police officer Wayne Simoes was arrested and charged last week for using excessive force and reportedly body slamming a civilian, Irma Marquez.

Telemundo has partnered with General Motors‘«÷ Sierra truck to create the broadband online series ‘«£Gol de Media Cancha‘«ō giving soccer players that didn‘«÷t make the cut at Miami FC a second chance to play for the team‘«÷s coach and win a contract.

Enrique Iglesias and Aventura announced a U.S. arena tour, kicking off September 4th in Laredo, TX and wrapping up October 5th in New Jersey.

American Latino will announce the winners of its 2nd annual American Latino TV Awards on July 19th. Over 46,000 viewer votes were tabulated. www.AmericanLatinoAwards.com.

The Lifetime Movie Network will debut a new original film ‘«£Little Girl Lost: The Delimar Vera Story‘«ō on August 17th at 8 pm. The movie stars Judy Reyes (‘«£Scrubs‘«ō), Ana Ortiz (‘«£Ugly Betty‘«ō), A Martinez (‘«£General Hospital‘«ō) and Hector Luis Bustamante (‘«£The Shield‘«ō, ‘«£24‘«ō).
