Che Biopic Gets Premiere

The Che Guevara biopic, called "Guerrilla" and "The Argentine", had its big budget premiere in Madrid this past week. The film stars Benicio Del Toro and was directed by Steven Soderbergh.

The Billboard Regional Mexican Music Summit will take place in Los Angeles on October 6th, culminating in the Noche Premmusa on October 8th at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live.

Calle 13 will premiere songs from their new album "Los de Atras Vienen Conmigo" at the MTV Tr3s Pre-VMA party on September 4th in Los Angeles. Calle 13 will also be featured on MTV Tr3s' "Artist Speaking Tr3s" campaign in September.

New data from Advertising Age shows that US advertisers spent the majority of their Hispanic media budgets, 64% on Spanish-language and cable TV with only 5% spent on internet. However, data from eMarketer's US Hispanic Media Usage report shows that under-35 Hispanics spend more time online than watching TV or do both at the same time.

Hurricane Gustav roared through Cuba this week as a category 5 hurricane, leaving thousands homeless. No deaths were reported in Cuba, however 94 deaths were reported due to flooding and landslides in Haiti, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.

Mexican authorities arrested 8 men who were digging a tunnel from a home in Mexicali, Baja California to a destination in the U.S. The tunnel, which is believed to be intended for drug smuggling, featured a rail-and-cart system, ventilation, lighting and an electric lift.

Former Argentine Army Generals, Antonio Bussi and Luciano Menendez, were convicted of kidnapping, torturing and murdering Senator Vargas Aignasse in 1976. The men, now in their 80's, were sentenced to life in prison to be served under house arrest.

Thousands took to the streets over the weekend in Mexico City and other cities to protest the increase in violent crimes such as kidnappings and murders. Kidnapping in Mexico has become such a problem that a company offers a homing chip that is implanted in the skin to track a person's whereabouts. The increase in violent crimes has also prompted talk of reinstating the death penalty for kidnappers. Victims are increasingly average citizens who are sometimes ransomed for as little as $500.

The Hispanic Leadership Fund held its Fiesta Americana Concert on September 1st in St. Paul Minnesota. Daddy Yankee headlined the event, on the heels of the announcement of his support of Presidential candidate John McCain.

Jesus Salas was named Senior Director of Programming and Promotions at America Te Ve in Miami. Salas was formerly Senior Program Director at XM Radio.

Mega TV announced its July 2008 Nielsen Hispanic Station Index ratings this week showing growth in time period ratings among viewers 18-49 and 25-54.

Payless ShoeSource has partnered with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund to launch the Payless Inspiring Possibilities Scholarship Program in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. 100% of the net profits from sales of the limited-edition Trilogy necklace will go to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund.
