OZOMATLI! OZOMATLI! Yo quiero bailar la m??sica de Ozomatli!! I have sang this line at the top of my lungs countless times, at every Ozomatli show I have been to for the past 9 years. I remember the first time I saw them perform live - they opened for the Man?í/Santana tour at the Universal Amphitheatre and surprised us as they closed the show by doing the conga line up and down every aisle. You can say that after that show, we were hooked.
I say "we" because my sister has joined me in this journey of discovering Ozomatli through the years...through the 60+ live shows...I also say "discovering" because we always hear new sounds, meet a new oZo band member from a different background, learn about their influences, etc. It never stops, there are so many influences that they have as musicians, and in turn has inspired us to listen to those artists as well.
My sister and I have been there through the departure of band members, to the welcoming of a new baby, the loss of a sister, to the joy of winning a Grammy (we were right there inside the STAPLES Center)!! Any place where Ozomatli was going to be, we were there because we knew it was going to be a good time!
Why do I love them? I love how they embody the LA culture. I am proud of the organizations they represent and how they transmit political activism through their music. I love that when I am at their shows, I forget who is around me and whatever was stressing me out 2 minutes ago - because the show just started and it's time to dance!
